WCLL Week 6 (3/2 - 3/8): Schedule, Thoughts, & Scores

I agree with Alex's analysis and after playing against UCSD this weekend, I really think that UCSD is a solid team that could give Arizona a tough game in the WCLL South. They played UCSB to a one goal game at half and a two goal game into the fourth quarter before the game was blown open (resulting in a lopsided final score), but they have some really solid players on both sides of the field and play well as a team. I wouldn't count them out to make a run at that conference and possibly in the playoffs.

It seems that some want to write off Arizona because of the loss to Michigan. They are not going anywhere, people! Yes, they lost to the #4 & #5 teams (SSU & Michigan), but as the #6 team isn't that what is supposed to happen? Some seem to forget that they beat #3 BYU not that long ago. Has that been forgotten already? One bad loss by a quality team to another quality team does not make them a bad team overnight. A week ago, people were saying that they were challenging for the top spot after their win against BYU. At the end of the season, I expect to see the Laxcats in the WCLL playoffs and, most probably, in the semi-final with an opportunity to avenge their loss to Sonoma.

It seems that arizona might be one of the most unpredictable teams in the MDIA. It would seem that they have the potential to beat any team, but also to lose to any team. Although Michigan was ranked higher than they are, they lost 12-1. It sounds like it was a slaughter. Perhaps they are living up to their reputation as a party school and need a wake up call to focus if they want to stay at the top tier of team in the MDIA. I saw that they play UCLA this weekend and it will be interesting to see how they rebound. I am also looking forward to seeing the michigan-byu game. If michigan can pull off 2 road vicotories against top teams they might be a real contender this year. The fact that they can score 12 against Zona's D should say something to the rest of the country

Plus, if Michigan and Arizona were 4/5 or even 3/6 going into the playoffs, they would be playing in the quarters anyway. That edge has to go to Michigan at this point. I don't see either of these two teams moving much above or below those two spots, so there is a strong probability they will meet again in Minneapolis.

Chico recently played UW from the PNCLL and won 16-6. Last weekend they traveled to Eugene Oregon and played the Ducks in a tight battle that saw the Ducks win 11-10. Chico played well but a 3min stick penalty was the difference. The next day Chico played SFU and lost 14-10. The Wildcats played a good first quarter but then got shut down. Chico is definately a team in the 15-25 range in my opinion.

Yob is the real deal on attack, I think he had around 10 goals in the two games.

When I showed up mid-2nd, the score was Sonoma 3, FSU 1. When I left late 3rd, it was Sonoma 8, FSU 2. Sonoma had the game pretty much in hand with FSU racking up a lot of penalties not helping their cause. I think of the 5 goals I saw them score, 3 were on EMO.

Random Thoughts:

- #5 for Sonoma is good, real good. Short shifty little middie.

- #3 Good long pole for FSU, intercepted a lot of passes in mid-air.

- Sonoma had a good fan base overall with about 7 guys heckling FSU. Really going after #8 and #11 on attack for FSU. I guess out of frustration in the first quarter, #8 threw his stick on the bench and for those that know LMU's field, it went over the parking garage, so they were ragging on him for that.

- FSU's goalie had the play/save of the day. Sonoma had a someone going iso on a middie from behind and FSU doubled, racked up a slashing call but Sonoma pulled it back out and tried the iso again, but he had #5 wide open a little above GLE on the opposite side about 10-15 yards out. The FSU goalie took a step behind to try and intercept the pass but missed. #5 took a step in and fired a rocket shot but the FSU goalie dove across crease and low to block it wide. Even #5 for Sonoma came over and gave the goalie a five for the nice save after the play.

- Sonoma looks good but didn't seem to have the depth that I saw UCSB have. They seemed to be running the same middies over and over again. And their bench was not as deep at UCSB.

- For those wondering about their goalie post-Gomez. I never saw Gomez play but everyone talked him up but their guy this year was decent to better then decent. I only saw him face 4 shots making 3 nice saves low and giving up one goal which came on a 5 on 4 face break.

- FSU racked up way too many penalties with the most coming after they got hit with an illegal body check, then another played got flagged for arguing the call. Then right when everything was settling down and about to start up, another FSU player got flagged for arguing. 6 on 3 man up, Sonoma hit two pipes before finally connecting with a goal.

Wow, a lot longer then I thought it would be for just seeing a little of 2 quarters.

Well, that should tone down the FSU hype somewhat. . . . .

Nice effort by FSU in the 4th then. I thought they were decent but they drew too many penalties to totally stay in it. Sonoma also killed them with time of poession when I was there.

That's the same score from AZ-SSU. So is FSU still top 7 material?

Top 7? Maybe not, but Top 10 for sure. I see at least Colorado passing them.
