Woman in California dies from drinking too much water???

I'm just watching a little late night tv and there was some radio station in Sacramento that was doing a stunt where people had to drink water in order to win a Nintendo Wii. One of the ladies drank more than she can handle and then ended up dying later at home from water poisoning. Is this true???? whats going on??

SACRAMENTO, California (AP) -- A woman who competed in a radio station's contest to see how much water she could drink without going to the bathroom died of water intoxication, the coroner's office said Saturday.

Jennifer Strange, 28, was found dead Friday in her suburban Rancho Cordova home hours after taking part in the "Hold Your Wee for a Wii" contest in which KDND 107.9 promised a Nintendo Wii video game system for the winner.

"She said to one of our supervisors that she was on her way home and her head was hurting her real bad," said Laura Rios, one of Strange's co-workers at Radiological Associates of Sacramento. "She was crying, and that was the last that anyone had heard from her."

It was not immediately known how much water Strange consumed.

A preliminary investigation found evidence "consistent with a water intoxication death," said assistant Coroner Ed Smith.

That also happened at a hazing incident a while back at Chico State, I believe, but I could be wrong about the school.

I recall it having been a fraternity at Chico State that had the pledges doing a gallon challenge with water.

Drinking too much water too quickly puts water into your bloodstream faster than the kidneys can pull it out, which floods the stream with a higher than normal concentration of water. Human red blood cells can't expand fast enough and actually rupture. The blood cells of camels are flexible and expand like balloons, which is why they are able to go so long without drinking.

An interesting side story, a radio station here in San Diego was doing basically the exact same thing about two days before I heard this story on the news- except the DJ's were holding it to give listeners free Charger's tickets.

If you listen to the audio of the broadcast from the contest, it's really surreal. The female co-host (or "hole" for us O&A fans) actually says at one point something along the lines of "Can't you die from drinking too much water? Maybe we should have done a little research into this" BEFORE THE CONTEST BEGUN! They even had a caller call in before the contest and mention a situation where a college student died from drinking too much water, possibly the same incident you're talking about from Chico.

Needless to say, about 10 employees have been so fired.

I wouldn't call it misogyny. Yes, it is derogatory, but if you look at the majority of female co-hosts, they don't add anything to the show and are just there to balance (negatively) the show. I'm not just saying this based on examples provided by O&A, but also from experience listening to many different morning shows around the country. Remember, I'm not talking about female hosts who host by themselves. I'm talking about a female who hosts with two males.

the incident did happen at chico but they were not a frat that was recognized by the school. just a bunch of guys living in a house trying to be a frat

Found an article on the Chico death, and it looks like there were two other incidences- I recalled the Chico death having occurred a long time ago (five years) but the article is dated in 2005.
