Adam,

But is there more of a concern over legally bought guns, or illegal ones? There will always be that .01% of random occurances of violence. But the threat of illegal arms is a scarier one since the perp has already done one thing wrong (bought a gun illegally) and the odds of a repeat offender often grows. Other than cracking down on gun sales in terms of security checks...I am not sure as to the fix. Although, I completely agree with people owning guns for defense. If less and less Americans own guns...the more of a twinkle appears in the eyes of the people that would buy a gun to harm/rob someone.

Beta,

I think that's a great question.

America is the world's number one arms dealer, and I think that has an effect on our culture. I think we the people need to start asking questions just like the one you just asked.

Given the uptick in military spending, meant to fight enemies abroad,

http://www.globalissues.org/Geopolitics ... sorder.asp

it seems like a really good time to ask some tough questions about how to stop violence here at home. After all, we claim that we don't want to fight them here in America, whoever they are.

The whole point of this debate, again in my opinion, is that we are already faced with a crisis of violence here at home, and more attention is needed, as the problem is very real, and certainly isn't going away on it's own.

I agree 100%.

I worked for the Economic Development Institute at GT during my undergrad waaaaay back in the day (5 months ago) and the one thing that was prevalent in violence and crime in the "rough" parts of Atlanta is the relationship b/w violent-crime and poverty...whereas whitecollar-crime and wealth holds the same connection, but not necessarily the same proportion. I would really like to assume that it was like this in most medium-large cities. The one thing that we saw was that more money per student going into the system..but it wasn't necessarily all going "to" the student, causing the school systems in those areas to collapse upon themselves. Only perpetuated by the people that stayed because they couldn't/won't get out. I personally believe that everything starts with education since it directly has an effect on crime and poverty. It seems like we (as a country) should start at the very bottom then work our way up. But that's just my 2 cents.

It may be a good short-term solution, but it's basically a band-aid for a canon-ball wound. I'm no expert, but the whole system needs to be re-worked from the ground up.

Starting with mandatory 15-20 minutes of calisthenics every day. And you think I'm kidding? This coming year, require it for kindergarten. Next year, kindergarten through 1st, the year after, kindergarten through 2nd grade, etc.

The health impact of obesity and the diseases to which it contributes, will soon become the number one issue in our healthcare system. I'll stand by Oakes on this one.

I mean I like the idea of people being not-dying, just curious as to how much $$$ was spent to figure this out. I vote they have mandatory recess/football/kickball/dodgeball in grades 1st->Career.
