Report: LSU to play in Rose Bowl

BATON ROUGE, La. -- LSU fans are buying Rose Bowl tickets in droves, gobbling up 32,000 pre-sale orders at $135 per ticket even though their Tigers have not yet been officially invited to the game.

So are these LSU tickets of the rose bowl getting returned or will there be a huge surplus on stubhub.com and ebay?

I'm pretty sure they didn't actually "purchased" 32K tickets. Just ticket committments by their fans to purchase them through the LSU Athletic Dept. if the Tigers were eventually selected to the Rose Bowl.

Most big schools send out a list of possible bowl choices in the 2nd half of the season listing all the possible bowl games (dates and locations). They ask the season ticket holders and donors to indicate ticket purchase for each respective game they would buy. IN the SEC's case (i.e. LSU), it would go something like this BCS Game, Sugar, Outback, Capitol One, Peach, Music City, Independence Bowl, etc. (all of the SEC bowl tie-ins).

My guess is that the Rose Bowl wasn't on the pre-order list for LSU, so they started taking orders via phone & online when it appeared as if LSU might get an outside shot at the Rose Bowl. And ticket demand was very high in Baton Rouge for the Rose, so tickets "committments" were going like hot-cakes.

IMHO it is rewarding mediocrity to give Boise State a BCS bowl for playing a ridiculous, cupcake schedule. Maybe Stanford or Duke should have an All-WAC/MAC/Sun-Belt schedule...go undefeated and get a BCS bid (Although not probable, since Duke lost to a 1-AA school..Stanford's best game came against San Jose State...who is bowl-bound from the WAC). I applaud Fresno State for taking on a hard(er) schedule and playing Oregon, Washington and LSU. Notre Dame is even getting a BCS bowl game this year. Why even have a regular season for Boise State if they're going to trounce no-names-only every year and start getting BCS games?

So what is your opinion of Boise State now?

Eat my words? They didn't kill them but even so...definitely not. Boise State finally played a ranked opponent and had a season of cupcakes to do so. I can go into the General Forum and hear EVERY SINGLE PERSON ripping on Florida State and saying the same thing about them for being ranked so high and not playing enough Top 5 opponents.

You cannot even compare the two. If there were real money on the line, and the MCLA were like the BCS, then the top two teams in the WCLL and RMLC would square off every year in the final 4. Those 2 conferences represent 100% of the national championship winners, and at least 75% of the final 4 appearances.

After a while, the public outcry that Michigan is being left out would be too much to take, and then the MCLABCS would add a 3rd game...of course there would be many restrictions on how a non WCLL-RMLC team could get in to that game.

The difference is that the winners of the nine conferences GET A CHANCE to prove it on the field. Even if they get blown out in the first round at nationals, at least they get a chance to play. There are those out there that say that the AQ system is unfair, and rewards mediocre teams who play in weak conferences. I think that AQ system is exactly what is needed to grow the sport across the country, and not just in the 2 MCLA hotbeds.

The BCS system is a sham. You know it. I know it. Everyone knows it. It is not about anything but money. If it wasn't about money, then there would be a playoff...or at least the conference champions would get set up in some higher-profile, bigger money bowls.

BSU deserves what they got this year in terms of money and respect, and their win in the Fiesta Bowl proves that they belonged on that stage.

Exactly, I am a huge proponent of the playoff system. I hate the BCS. March Madness is ridiculously exciting, even for me and I don't even like basketball. IMHO a BCS playoff would be much more profitable if they incorporated the 4 BCS bowls.

I compared college football and the MCLA because I believe in strength of schedule for every sport...not just one. I can go from one message board forum where people are blasting teams that don't play any top 5 ranked opponents until the playoffs, then I come in this message board with the same crowd (at least they have the access to this room too) who don't seem to have a problem that BSU never plays anyone, ever, not even ranked, until bowl-game-time...which even then is seldom won. I mean I love contradictions as much as the next person...but without a playoff system in college football, without teams making respectable schedules that they DO control, there will always be controversy.

BSU went to a bowl game that I still contest they didn't deserve, and won against Oklahoma. That doesn't IMHO justify them being there. In college football, more than anything there is always the chance of an upset. UCLA's will beat USC, USF's will beat Rutgers, Rutgers' will beat Louisville, Temple/Duke will win a game (ok maybe not). If it is justified that BSU deserved to be there because they won...then think of all of the teams that didn't deserve to be in a National Championship and lost. Oklahoma in 2004 and 2005. Nebraska in 2002. Even Pittsburg against Utah in 2004 that was a mess in every direction.

BSU played a great game last night against a formidable opponent in Oklahoma. No one can take their win last night away from them. In the long term, what they did last night was 1/6 of what teams like LSU, Auburn, Florida, Arkansas, Ohio State, Texas do every year, week-in and week-out before they play a bowl game...if they get to play one at all.

What I want to know is will UM get a rematch with USC and then get a rematch with OSU?

Regardless of how the Gators do, I don't think anyone would argue that UM deserved the BCS game now.

Just came back from visiting the Sports Illustrated.com site after looking at the Superfans Gallery. One of the pictures showed a Georgia fan holding up a sign reading: "Chickens Stole our Peach Tradition" at the Chick-fil-A Bowl in which Georgia defeated Virginia Tech.

There was also a picture of three Boise State University fans standing with their large somberos, and the caption reads, "They are not Three Amigos..."

Louisville is the championship game! I'm still for playing out 4 BCS games and then a championship game out of those 8 teams.

whoa...proofreading is fundamental. Play out the 4 BCS games with the top 2 playing in a championship game.

Louisville IN the championship game!

Great job Domers. 9 in a row.

Brady Quinn ended his career at Notre Dame without a bowl win. I hope he goes to the Raiders. Will enjoy seeing him get crushed by the Chargers, Broncos, and Chiefs on a regular basis....

Enjoyed this column on ESPN....

NEW ORLEANS -- Even after Notre Dame lost its ninth consecutive bowl game Wednesday night -- yet another one in ugly fashion with a 41-14 loss to No. 4 LSU in the Allstate Sugar Bowl -- there is hope for Fighting Irish fans.

Even without record-setting quarterback Brady Quinn, receiver Jeff Samardzija and many more of its best players next season, Notre Dame will finally end its postseason drought, now the longest in NCAA history.

The Fighting Irish will end the postseason losing streak that dates back to 1994 because next season they'll be playing in some second-tier bowl game in a non-descript place like Shreveport, La., which is where they should have been playing during much of the last two decades.

Against LSU, Notre Dame once again proved it doesn't deserve to play in BCS bowl games, which have become its birthright because of the school's national stature and ability to draw high TV ratings.

And by shutting out the Fighting Irish in the second half and erupting for 577 yards of offense in the game, the Tigers again proved Notre Dame is no longer capable of beating teams like LSU. Or Ohio State, Michigan and Southern California, which also handed the Fighting Irish lopsided losses in the last year.

So will Charlie Weiss be the anti-Saban and decide that one of those NFL coaching slots looks attractive?? Lots of warm-weather options - Arizona, Miami, or heaven forbid - Atlanta!
