NLL gives OK to "Air Gait" move
Mammoth welcomes rule change

A question about the "Air Gait" move prompts a chuckle from low-key Gary Gait, coach of the defending National Lacrosse League champion Colorado Mammoth.
Gait originated the acrobatic move while playing in the NCAA Tournament for Syracuse in 1988. Diving from behind the net, his mid-air shot - without breaking the plane of the crease in front of the goal - became the most exciting move in the sport.
Yet it was banned from the indoor pro league, the NLL, which was founded in 1987.
Over the years, Mammoth general manager Steve Govett pushed for the inclusion of the move.
"We've had several discussions, and it was confusing why it wasn't allowed," Govett said. "Goalie safety is part of it; we don't want them shooting off the goalie.
"But the most exciting play in lacrosse was outlawed. Every kid has tried it. It is allowed in the outdoor pro league and we outlawed it? It seemed silly."
With a nod toward goalkeeper safety, the NLL announced the approval of the "Air Gait" this month. It is allowed, provided it is a clean shot, meaning that shots banked off the goalkeeper or his stick will be waved off.
