Deer are very quick animals. It very may have well been that he could not avoid it. Just about anybody in Minnesota or Wisconsin has hit a deer or knows someone who has hit a deer. There were an estimated 19,000 car crashes caused by a deer in 2001 in Minnesota alone. That is about the same amount as drunk driving accidents from 1998-2002. Thats one year of deer as opposed to 5 years of drunk driving.

This is exactly what I was thinking of when I read the story. From A League of Their Own:
Mae Mordabito: What if at a key moment in the game my, my uniform bursts open and, uh, oops!, my bosoms come flying out? That, that might draw a crowd, right?
Doris Murphy: You think there are men in this country who ain't seen your bosoms?
Dagger!
