Joel Zumaya likes to play guitar hero

Postby bste_lax on Thu Dec 14, 2006 6:12 pm

The Tigers are satisfied they won't see a recurrence of the right wrist and forearm inflammation that sidelined Joel Zumaya for three games of the American League Championship Series.

Why? Club president and general manager Dave Dombrowski told WXYT-AM (1270) on Wednesday the team had concluded Zumaya's injury resulted from playing a video game, not from his powerful throwing motion.

"That was probably what was taking place," Dombrowski later told the Free Press.

Zumaya, 22, was known to play "Guitar Hero," a PlayStation 2 game in which a player uses a guitar-shaped controller to simulate the performance of popular songs.

Somewhere, Lionel Simmons is feeling vindicated.

Sacramento Kings rookie Lionel Simmons missed some games during the 1991 season when he developed tendinitis in his right wrist from playing too much GameBoy.

I had the same problem from playing foosball my junior year (we had a table in our house). It killed my wrist, but, c'mon, I wasn't goin to not play because of it.

The question in my mind is: are these players insured by Lloyds of London?

Athlete's Non-Sports Injuries

Postby Dan Wishengrad on Fri Dec 15, 2006 11:47 pm

Most of you laxxers are to young to remember this one, but the Tigers had another odd non-baseball-related injury 20-something years ago. All-Star Second Baseman Lou Whitaker hurt his knee while appearing on "Dance Fever" with his wife, and missed the remainder of that season.
