looks like the kid probably shouldve stood up. the police were overboard , but if he cooperates from the beginning then none of that happens. thats not Rodney King-esque or anything.
we didnt see why any of this began, though,

what did he expect when he tells a cop to 'get off of me' ?
what else were the police supposed to do?
it appeared to be a contact taser, not a taser gun. he was yelling to inflame the situation. they don't hurt that bad.
he'll probably win a lawsuit though.

Everyone was in the wrong, but using a taser on someone that is handcuffed, multiple times, is crap. 2 grown men can physically remove the kid from the situation without having to do that, & they did at the end.
The build up to the incident is in the article, it's essentially the student did not have his ID card & was asked to leave, refused, & as he was leaving on his own terms police entered the building & stopped him. The situation grew into the mess that we saw there, & now someone is going to lose his career.
Would the situation be less appalling if he had tried to assault an officer? No way. He was in custody when he was handcuffed, hitting him with a baton, kicking him, or tasing him while he's on the ground are all over the top (they only tased him for those that didn't read the article). Subdue him sure, subdue him with some force so there is no chance of anyone else getting kicked or injured, but tasing him because he won't stand up.... Stand him up! He's in handcuffs, there are two of you! You're trained officers... You can't do that? No problem, hold him down, wait for back-up, hog-tie him, & carry him down the stairs...

they repeatedly tried to stand him up, he kept going limp and falling to the ground.
the article said they tazed him 2 times, i think it was more than that, but it was hard to tell the pain yells from the trying to incite a riot yells.

I'm with ya, I just think it was too much... I have some "dear friends" that are officers & I have been tased, it sucks. My problem isn't even the fact that he got tased. The first one probably took him to the ground, they pinned & handcuffed him, which had him well under control. Great use of the taser if that's the case, it's not permanent damage, only temporary pain & much better than causing a baton fracture injuring an officer over someone that is resisting arrest. I don't like added emphasis of "You're helpless, let me use my taser on you if you don't listen." I never got a good look if it was a stun gun or a taser, I've never been stun gunned, so who knows if that's as bad as a taser? I'm sure the contact burn isn't any worse than the hooks shot into you with a taser.
Please keep in mind this is coming from a conservative that thinks sentencing should be a deterrent as well as a punishment.

a stun gun likely could not have been reloaded as fast. it appearred to me to be a contact tazer when they got him by the computers.

First of all, my favourite part of the video was "HERE'S YOUR PATRIOT ACT!!!"
Second, after he got tasered the first time, there was no need to taser him again (I don't know if the first one was necessary). Tasering him because he won't stand up isn't justification to do it again. It's called nonviolent (or passive) resistance. If they wanted him out of there, they could have just dragged him. No need to taser him again and again.

I gotta say punk kid. I don't know about the rest of you but I have learned that the best way to interact with police officers is courteously and with copious amounts of respect. I don't suggest ever trying to pull away from an officer and yelling, "Get off!". None of this would happened if the kid had the proper identification on him and then he escalated the incident by resisting the police.
I do wish they officers had shown more restraint and I am sure they are going to be reprimanded. I don't blame them for being a little defensive with the crowd though, that was quite a mob by the end.
At least the kid was a man about it and didn't cry and scream...

What happened to the old-fashioned way of pulling up the person and drag him or her? If a person goes limp or refuses to stand up, an officer can just get his hand on the individual and pull him up and escort him away. Taser is quite excessive eventhough it was done the first time, but the second time is ridiculous.
Would not be surprised that the talking heads will be all over on this issue.

Yeah, treat officers with complete respect to give them a sense of power. They want attention and respect because mommy and daddy didn't give them any when they were growing up. UC cops are payed ridiculous amounts of money...and for what? To abuse their power and taser somebody for not having (supposedly) an ID card? What's next? Tasering people for riding their bike through campus? They should have probably shot the guy. I am sure that some people on this board that would be just fine with that, because cops, just like soldiers, are protecting our freedom. For all we know, this guy was probably a terrorist. He was probably Asian. Asian countries are near the Middle East. Sounds like a slam dunk to me. Yet another reason why cops are some of the lowest individuals to roam this earth.

He didn't listen to the cops so they tased him. No sympathy whatsoever here. I think I heard "get up" at least 100 times. Im not sure, but screaming profanity (at least in GA) is actually illegal. I would have loved to see that kid's parents trying to discipline him as a child...nevermind...doesn't look like that happened.

The cops were in the wrong here. They asked the kid 100 times to get up, when they could have easily pulled him up. They don't have a right to put they're hands on him when he was leaving the building anyway. He was walking out, and they tried to play tough guys and "escort" him out.
After this the kid was an idiot.

Yeah, they were indeed rough. One thing people forget about police officers is that they have to treat every single person they deal with like they may do something...or else they're dead. I know some people are gonna say "they're college kids, what could they possibly do?!", but how many cops pull over a young kid and get shot? Cops are underpaid, overstressed and you mess with them you get messed up.
