MLL ANNOUNCES 20-MAN PROTECTED LIST FOR EACH TEAM

September 29, 2006 - Major League Lacrosse (MLL), the premier professional outdoor lacrosse league, required all 10 teams to submit their 20-man rosters by 5:00PM ET on Friday, September 29 according to MLL Commissioner David Gross.

While there were not a great deal of surprises among the names left unprotected there were definitely some that MLL fans will recognize. Mike Battista and Dave Evans of the Boston Cannons both have spoken of retirement and were left off of the Boston 20-man roster.

One of the biggest names left unprotected was goalie Greg Cattrano, who has been rumored to be retiring. Aside from being regarded as the top goalie in MLL history, Cattrano also has the distinction of playing in the first five MLL championship games. Lizard teammate Pat McCabe, who already announced his retirement, was also left off of the Long Island list.

Other notables left unprotected include Chris Cercy and Brandon Testa of Denver, Peter Inge of the Dragons, Todd Rassas of Chicago and Regy Thorpe of the Rattlers. Cercy and Inge both had standout seasons in 2006 as faceoff specialists while Rassas had already announced his retirement.

One interesting player who was protected but did not play last year was Mikey Powell. His rights were retained by the Baltimore Bayhawks.

Players not protected are now entered into the MLL Player Pool. MLL teams are now allowed to make trades. Teams cannot pick-up players from the MLL Player Pool until after the Supplemental Draft which is set to take place this winter.
