While I don't know if I would call him the absolute best, after playing against him this weekend I can safely say that I would be surprised if he is not a first or second team All-American pick at attack this year. A truly explosive player that simply makes things happen on the field; he is good sized yet very quick, moves the ball well, can feed, drive, shoot, ride, basically do everything really well...

Batman, he is a great player because he can score several games a game. But some of his goals come from dogding throug three people with his stick over his head. This makes it easy to see him thumbing it. Getting 6 points is very good even if 2 of those points come from thunbing the ball. 4 legitimate points a game is still a good outing.

It was blatant and obvious to all who watched. He is a great player. Fact. But the refs are letting this go and it is a joke to not call it.

what exactly is the "penalty" for thumbing the ball?

Correct. It is an illegal procedure call.

Misinformed?
The player mentioned above thumbs ball consistently, I have witnessed it on multiple occasions. However, we shouldn't have to call individuals out on this rule. As a player, I believe the saying goes: "if you ain't cheatin' you ain't tryin." To put it simply, the rule should be enforced by the officials, every time.

Also, is there a limit to how many times a player can be found guilty of infractions like these before they are given a time serving penalty? Not sure, but this would make for even more interesting "judgement" calls.

Paul Rabil, out of DeMatha, now at Hopkins was a noted thumber as a senior. But he was also being double and triple teamed for the entire game.

Call it whatever you want, but 6pts...4pts...whatever, stats aren't legit unless you're not thumbing the ball. Lets not turn this into a Bateman bashing but I hope he and everyone else work on their stick skills and dodging as opposed to resorting to a cheap thumb tactic.

I'll see him play in later this season so it should be entertaining...

thumbing

Postby sledgehammer on Wed Mar 02, 2005 11:58 pm

While the penalty for thumbing the ball is only a change of posession, I think that this is generally viewed as unacceptable within the lacrosse community. It's possible that a player's hand might slide too far up the stick, but if a person is consistently being called for thumbing, something should be done about it. I think that this might be the responsibility of the coach if there is nothing else that can be done.
