Paypal

Postby cjwilhelmi on Mon Jul 03, 2006 3:41 pm

Someone wants to pay me for some lax stuff using paypal. I already have an account but how easy is it to receive money from it? I have never used it before and any advice would be helpful.

Thanks

Easy. They send the money to your account name and the money shows up in your account.

Can I put the money in a bank account? Or does it stay in a magical paypal account?

This sounds really stupid but I dont know much about paypal. Is my account name just my email or something easy like that?

when you set up your paypal account, you should be able to put your bank account information in there. then all transactions come and go directly from your bank account unless you'd rather have a "magical" account that just exists in paypal land.

As much as I like "magical" lands, I would rather have currency that I can blow on more lacrosse gear.

Thanks for your help.

I actually use my PayPal account as a regular bank account. I only have a real checking account to write checks and pay bills. PayPal definitely has its advantages. For one, you can get an account that pays interest on deposited money and gives you cash back when you use their debit card as a credit card (there are qualifications to have this account, but they aren't too high... not sure what they are, but I qualified so they can't be bad). You definitely still need an account through a regular bank, though, since the only way to put money in your PayPal account is to receive it from someone through PayPal or to do a bank transfer (a free transaction).

As for receiving money, it's very simply. The person sending you money just types in the e-mail address you have linked with your account and the amount they want to send, and it gets put into your own account. You can then transfer the money out of PayPal into your real checking account.

Although I personally have never had a problem with paypal, here are some things to consider linked below. Unless I have multiple auctions going at the same time, I usually just immediately request for a transfer to my bank account when I receive any funds. As much time as I spend doing things online as a computer science major, I'm still more comfortable with some things being Brick & Mortar, or at least having a much longer history.

That may all be true, I don't know. I've been using it for several years and never had a problem.

Same here. Well, almost... the only problem I had was due to my own stupidity. I got an e-mail through eBay (I used to run an eBay business) from an online retailer in Russia who bought most of their products through American companies like Target and BestBuy. They claimed these companies wouldn't ship to Russia so they needed a go-between, that being me. These companies would ship the product to me and this Russian company would e-mail me a pre-paid shipping label to ship it to them. They would pay me $50 for every package I sent out within 24 hours of receiving it.

Well, I was hooked. I did it once. Received the $50. Soon after I shut down my eBay business and didn't receive any more packages. Couple months later I check my PayPal account (this was before I used it as a primary account) and find out that the Russian company filed some kind of action against the $50 transaction and got their money back.

But, like I said, this was all due to my own stupidity and niavite. Also turns out this was a a stolen credit card scheme.

I´ve also used PayPal to make and receive online payments with no problems over the last 5+ years. It doesn´t replace my real bank, just a supplement. Mostly for Ebay type stuff. I also can receive online credit card payments easily for USLIA.com transactions.

Here's my issue:

So, last night, I'm the winning bidder for this item:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=015&item=250027740872&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1

Just a Titleist bag if you can't see it. I get an email today from the seller and he's like "Oh yeah, there's a logo on the side of the bag." This was nowhere in the item description, so of course I feel like I've been had. I already have a "Temporary Authorization" on my credit card e-statement, but he's saying if I want to cancel, then it's not a problem. Of course I'm cancelling. Anyone been through this before? I'm in deliberation with him right now, so who knows what'll happen...

The reason I posted this is because I paid through PayPal.

Fortunately, I've been lucky and never had a problem like this. But do make sure you report this through Ebay so you don't get nailed as refusing to pay for an item you've won.

Chris, was he referring to the Titleist logo? Seems pretty prominent in the picture, or was there a different logo that can't be seen?

You can refuse payment/dispute the transaction through Ebay. (And enter negative feedback for the seller.). If you aren't happy, then I would defintely cancel the transaction. Ebay will get you your money back... if not - then dispute the charge with your CC company.

The picture in the listing was a stock photo. He said that the Country Club logo takes the place of the "Titleist" logo on the RHS of the bag. In all honesty, it probably would not have been that big of a deal to me, but I felt as though I had been duped. "Hey, you won, but instead of this, you get this."

He cancelled my payment through PayPal and I'm waiting for some sort of credit on my statement. Ebay does offer a dispute option if the buyer/seller do not get what they want. The dispute I will file if I don't get my money back is a "Item significanly different than listed." This is a 5 step program which results in a discount, full refund, or, a filed claim.

Thanks for the input...I'll keep you posted!
