VH1 is running the first 12 hours of MTV programming in honor of its 25th anniversary.

I remember sitting out in front of my house watching them install cable in our neighborhood. We found all sorts of fun things to do with the big wooden cable spools. Cable TV was pretty amazing then and my sister and I were both avid MTV watchers, uncluding the world premier of the Thriller video. I think the novelty of a music video wore off for me in the late eighties though.

They are on from around 3am to 9am. I catch new videos now and then while I am eating breakfast.
Of course in the afternoon on the top video countdowns, but usually only play 25% of the video and have 4 minute long commercials.

MTV 2 plays videos 75% of the time and MTV Hits plays videos 100% of the time (but they are mostly Top 40 stuff).
Fuse is my favorite current music station. 75% of it is music videos and more of it is directed towards alternative music and smaller bands I enjoy. They do play some Top 40 and rap/hip-hop but not as much as MTV.
