forget $.99 a song at itunes, im doing $.12 a song

If you haven't heard of http://www.allofmp3.com/, you should check it out now! If nothing else this post should spark some debate about legal and illegal.

Allofmp3.com is a website based in russia, and thanks to thier shoddy laws it appears to be legal for them to sell music for as low as $.10 a song. You can get whole albums for a buck and a half. This site even spawned a story in the NY times.

I would worry with my Credit Card, but you can use PayPal as well. Plus I have heard of many people using it for the past 2 yrs and not having any problem.

It's based in Russia, and definately not legitimate. At least according to the RIAA. It's a pretty crappy format as well.

I'd keep my CC info to myself.

The disclaimer says it's not legal in the US, but I doubt that's binding.

First off I hate the RIAA so whatever they say doesn't even interest me. Second like I said I would use paypal rather than my own CC. The music quality has been great for me thus far and is just as good as a cd. And lastly it is completely legal to import music to the U.S. if you go on to Amazon.uk it isn't illegal to purchase and download from them. Just shakey russian laws that make it cheaper there. At least for now.

You live in the US.

You are governed by US copywright laws.

"Purchasing" music via the site violates US copywright laws.

I hate the RIAA too, but you're just rationalizing your petty theft.

Not to nitpick, but there is a big difference between mp3 format, and CD quality audio.

Plus, you can't be sure what else could be in those files, trojans, or other whatnots.

Amending my thoughts.

It appears the courts will decide it's legality here in America.

Also, it sounds as if they've solved their codec issues, so it's probably quite good as far as sound is concerned.

Sorry to call you a thief, but I still think it's pretty shady.

Like you said for now it is "technically" not illegal, but obviously the artist, record label, entourage, and so on are probably not getting thier cut. In time I think this service will disappear, but for now I will take advantage. I am not saying that it is alright, but my main argument will be this: The majority of the songs I have downloaded thus far are those that I would not normally have bought. When an entire cd is a whopping $1.50 it is much easier to be adventurous than when it is $12.99 at the lowest. Especially on a college budget. The artists that I really like, love, listen over and over to, I heavily support via concerts, t shirts, and buying thier cd's multiple times because I have either worn out, lost or let someone "borrow" them. Anyway while I don't think it is all prim and proper, for now I will enjoy all that is "allofmp3.com", and once it is shut down it will be back to $.99 at itunes.
