World Lacrosse Championships Discussion

Postby Sonny on Thu Jun 08, 2006 1:54 pm

LONDON, Ont., Canada – The 2006 Warrior World Lacrosse Championships are just over one month away. The tournament will end on the heels of another global championship, the World Cup of Soccer in Germany, early next month.

The Lacrosse tournament, which runs from July 13-22, is expected to be the largest lacrosse event in history, promising to draw tens of thousands of fans to London, Ont., "The Forest City."

The International Lacrosse Federation, which oversees international lacrosse competitions and global development of the game, is excited about the prospect of bringing the games back to Canada for the first time since 1986, when Toronto's Varsity Stadium played host to the event.

"This event will mark an important period in the growth and development of lacrosse at an international level," said Stan Cockerton, Vice President of the ILF and a native of Oshawa, Ont. "It's great to see countries like Bermuda, the Netherlands and the Czech Republic fully embracing the sport. The growth of the game is very positive."

Twenty-one teams will compete for the world championship at TD Waterhouse Stadium at the University of Western Ontario and the North London Athletic Fields. Another 47 teams will compete in a less-competitive 2006 Frank's Red Hot Festival and about 20 teams will compete in a National Development Program (NDP) Lacrosse tournament. Over 100,000 players, family members, coaches, officials, administrators and fans are expected to attend the event.

With a national television deal with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation imminent and other television contracts in the works, the event will also garner the highest level of global media coverage in the event's 49-year history.

For more information on the tournament, please visit www.2006worldlacrosse.com.

I've only looked through the linked site briefly, but does anyone know if this is going to be carried on TV anywhere?

I think I learned a valuable lesson here. Read the text quoted in the post instead of barrelling to the site and looking for a TV link or anything that might lead TV info.

Since World Cup will wind down on July 9, who do you think will win the ILF World Championship? I am just starting reading the reviews of a record 21 teams participating in the ILF Championships. The oldest lacrosse player is John Marr (67 years old, goalie) with Scotland is, yes, still playing! He has a back-up goalie in Matt Russell with Navy.

Any "predictions" and discussions??

At the end of April, current UD student John Pastorek, president of the UD Men's Lacrosse Club, was named to the Italian National Lacrosse Team and will play in the 2006 World Lacrosse Championship in London, Ontario, in July.

The ILF games begin today!

The first game of all games will be the Iroquois Nationals against England at 12:30 pm EST.

You can check out the World Champinship schedule at:

http://2006worldlacrosse.com/images/Schedule.pdf

The venues at the World Championships can be found at:

http://www.2006worldlacrosse.com/1_Venue.php

That will give you an idea of where the fields are when looking at the schedule.

Depending on some folks using laptops or computers to do game trackers, you may want to check out laxpower.com to check on the game trackers. Of course, no guarantees there.

USA faces off against Australia at 4 pm; Canada hosts Japan at 7:30 pm on CBC.

As for CSTV, I am sure you all will figure out how to get that info. :)

I read that CSTV is broadcasting the Canada v. Iroquouis and USA v. Canada games this weekend and then the championship game next week.

Saw this thread from laxpower and thought you all would be interested in this blog by John Weaver about lacrosse in general (MLL All-Star and his thoughts on World Lacrosse championships; you will read his concise comment about the pink helmets). His title is "American Sticks and Balls vs Everyone's Else." (July 14, 2006)

THe Iroquois Nation beat England today 13-10. Looked like a great game today with Brett Bucktooth leading all scorers. The USA game is on in 45 minutes (4pm EST).

Anyone else surprised Tierney got the start? Seems like Garrity played the first half of all the exhibition games.

EDIT: USA up 1-0, Walters from M. Powell, EMO goal
