2006 Tewaaraton Discussion

From Division I Forum at Laxpower, those guys are stating that the finalists may boil down to three:

Matt Ward (Virginia) (this is the guy with a broken hand)
Sean Morris (Massachusetts)
Joe Walters (Maryland)

Some say it would be Ward; others say Morris unless he gets UMass to Final Four; some say Walters because of his team's tough schedule, etc., etc.

Eventhough I would want Walters to win it, I still think it will be Matt Ward.

As for the ladies, I would not be surprised that it will be Katie Chrest.

Maybe it's just me, but do any of you believe any of these guys have "seized" the lax public's imagination like past award winners?

Don't get me wrong - these three are great, GREAT players. But there's nothing about them that says - "Watch me, because my likes may never come again"

Agree with Rob...there is no Harrison or Powell this year. I think Danowski was the only player that had that ability.

This year's bunch is an interesting group...Morris is probably the most creative, Walters is the best finisher and I'd take Dixon over Ward.

However, the best player I've seen play all year, and the one guy who I think can impact a game more than anyone is Jack Reid from UMass...I don't see how he was not a finalist.

PS - The other guy I loved all year was Geoff Snider from Denver...led the nation in ground balls, set an NCAA record for ground balls/game, second in the nation in FO %, plus throw in 33 points on the season and leading Denver to a perfect conference record and their first bid to the NCAA tourney. He'll either go 1 or 2 in the NLL entry draft.

BYU - My choice at the beginning of the year was Danowski or Rabil (if he could handle being the #1 guy).

Rabil - while outstanding - couldn't handle being #1 this year. Give him time though.

I think Snider would have been a great finalist. And I agree I'd rather have Dixon than Ward.

I"ve not seen Reid play - but heard he's a monster. Looking forward to seeing him this weekend.

Matt Ward?

Don't get me wrong - great shooter, great player. But does he belong with the other 3 players? I know I'm repeating myself from above....

Problem is - did ANY player in 2006 college lacrosse (whose team finished the season) belong with the three players listed above?

question; they made a big deal out of ward breaking gary gait's goal record, didn't gary do it in one less game (12 team tourney)?

I think Matt Ward absolutely belongs in the same sentence as Powell, Harrison, and Shanahan.

He was the leader of the best team I have ever seen, the first team to go 17-0. He set the tournament scoring record while playing with a broken hand, including 5 goals in the championship game. He's one tough hombre....and he's from my hometown so automatic extra points.

Maybe he went a little under the radar because of the Duke scandal and UVA losing two scheduled games. And if Hopkins doesn't score with with under 12 seconds left last year, maybe Harrison doesn't win the Tewaaraton last year.

good point.

ward- i just kinda have the feeling he is the best guy on the best team. don't know that he would have put up such numbers on a less competitive team. also a completely classy dude who gave great sound bytes after the game.

I didn't even think about there being fewer games in Gait's day. Regardless, I think this will become like the Heisman where we see the best offensive player on the championship team win every year.

That is possible, yet Doug Shanahan played for Hofstra Flying Dutchmen/Pride (2001).
