With the link below, it is from Inside Lacrosse which has the story about Cortland's interim head coach, Rich Barnes who led the Red Dragons to the DIII title yesterday. The article explains about Rich Barnes' decision not to apply for the head coach position since Cortland sent out a nationwide search for a new head coach.

Rich Barnes is a Cortland graduate (1989) and is a Cortland native. I am sure he would never in his wildest dream that he would bring back the national title to his alma mater and to his hometown. On the other hand, I hope all will go well with his son who had a brain tumor last spring and will have surgery this summer.

Am I the only one who noticed how bad the officiating was during the championship weekend???? Pretty much ANY of the USLIA officials could have called just as good a game and probably better! Did someone tell these guys to keep their flags in their pockets? They missed several calls from face off men not coming down together, face off man kneeling on his opponents stick, several pushes in the back (one of which was with possession right in front of the UVA bench and then tried to sell his call by claiming the player had stepped on the line first when the replay showed he clearly did not!) And, they missed several other calls as well. I am curious why the NCAA DI officials are so revered and the USLIA officials are so looked down upon when it has been obvious to me for years that the USLIA officials are pretty much just as good as the NCAA DI officials?

bad officiating, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder.

not only was the cortland - salisbury game the best action of the weekend, but i loved that the refs called stalling against the offensive team only 2 minutes into the 1st quarter of the championship game. while there were a few controversial calls and non-calls late in the 4th quarter, i thought that the refs set the tone early and encouraged the teams to press on offense. it was an incredible back and forth game.

the real question is whether d1 refs, or mdia refs, will follow suit and start to give stall warnings more quickly.

Why are D1 refs so revered? Because we all dream of playing with refs who understand the game. There wasnt one second of any game where a ref dictated who had the ball, and they let the teams determine the game. So what am i saying? A good ref learns when to keep his flag in his pocket, and when to let it fly. The fact that you looked at the game and thought that because the face-off guys hadnt come down together, he should have called it. NO WAY!!!! As a ref you cant dictate the game. I am going to hear all about how if it is in the rule book, you better call it. That just isnt true. That is why i dream of playing with D1 refs, who know how to let the players play. Sorry, but you asked for it.

I am going to have to agree with these other guys. I think the refs did a great job. They let the players play and they did not dictate the game. Granted they missed a couple of things that could have been called, but they are only human. The games were extremely entertaining and they let the players control how they went.
