Victoria Tournament August 25th, 26th, & 27th

Postby Kyle Berggren on Wed May 24, 2006 6:40 pm

Alright, we have confirmation, the tournament will be played on the weekend above. That is from Friday to Sunday. One of the organizers told me that he's sure he'll be able to accomidate teams that couldn't play games on that Friday. Other than that, should be good competition, and a good time. Right now Jason is working on a preleminary list of guys for the team we'll help sponsor. Again, PNCLL B first team players are automatically invited to play, and we'll get back to you with more information as it comes in.

Yeah, depending on where you go. Since they cancelled the tournament last year, I spent time at the Butchart Gardens and some other places of interest and it was quite nice. However, nobody is allowed to water their lawns, so the rest of the city doesn't look too great.

Why did they cancel the tourney last year?? Who are the organizers and how do we get hold of them to be part of the tourney??

I thought it was because they couldn't get enough teams...I don't really remember though.

As I understand it, the fields at the Juan de Fuca were being upgraded and the scheduling to complete this task in time for 2005 Summer Slam wasn't working out. Here is the email that went out last year, I receive a lot of this stuff as an NWWLA officer.

2005 Victoria Summer Slam Postponed Until Next Year
by Slam Committee on June 16, 2005 @ 7:56:06 am
It's a sad day in the Lacrosse world today...

The 2005 Victoria Summer Slam has to be postponed until next year.

For the past three years, we have strived to provide you with some of the best Lacrosse Victoria could offer. And over those three years, we've seen the Summer Slam progress into a fantastic tournament. With the Venue, the weather and the Lacrosse, people have been talking about our tournament all across
North America.

This year however, we have run into some unexpected situations in our scheduling, that has resulted in us not being able to host the tournament in the same fashion that you have become accustomed to. We do not want to hold a tournament that isn't the best that we could offer. The 'Organizers' do apologize to you all, as we are all avid Lacrosse players and fans, and to see this hiatus hits us hard in our hearts as we truly love the game and our Tournament.

We want to make this promise to you all...

WE WILL BE BACK NEXT YEAR!!!

We need to make some changes in our plans to be able to come back to the level that the Summer Slam should be. I encourage you all to let us know how we can make this a better tourney. Ideas from dates, to venues, to activities to the game; we want to hear from you so we can ensure that our summers are never again without the Victoria Summer Slam.

Yours in Lacrosse,

Here is a link to the Juan de Fuca Recreation Centre, click on the Virtual Tour option - really a wonderful place, wonderful fields, great atmosphere downtown Victoria, and some fun watering holes. And here is the 2006 update email I received:

Well after a 1 year hiatus...

This is just a quick email to tell you all that on August 25-27th, Victoria will once again be hosting the Summer Slam Lacrosse Tournament. All the great details will be coming soon, but we felt that we should at least get the great news out and see who's interested.

There will be 6 womens teams, 4 masters teams, 8 mens teams (subject to change). Entrance fee $500 before June 1st - $600 after

Please let me know if you have any interest in playing, sending a team, volunteering or sponsoring. Like I said, all of the remaining details will be coming shortly. We're hoping to get all the teams back from years past and some new ones as well. Hopefully holding it later in the summer, we can attract a few more Canadians and American teams.

Just so you know, we are totally excited to be having this tourny again. It was really hard missing last year, but as we said, we'll be coming back even better than before.

Cheers
Fred Jenner

finally - you can email Fred Jenner directly to tell him you're interested at fjenner@jennerchev.com

I'm hoping to finish rehabbing my knee by then and be on the fields wearing stripes to ref the womens games!

Hotels in Victoria

Postby Jana on Mon Jun 05, 2006 12:27 pm

I received an email this weekend from Linda Jenner with group rate hotel info in Victoria, but it's a PDF and I don't have time at work to transcribe onto the BB. If you want the hotel info, shoot me a PM or email me at LaxJana@yahoo.com and I will forward.

Just a reminder to make ferry reservations in advance online, and show up in advance - in the summer they do sell out on Fridays and you literally do not want to miss your boat!

The ferry reservations are a scam! I made reservations online last year and on the way there, I showed up 5 minutes before my ship was to leave (we were lost) and my "reservations" could not be used, not even for the next ship. I was told to be 30 minutes early in order to use my reservation. On the way home, I made sure to be 30 minutes early and found I was the first one there. Moral of the story, be 30 minutes early and you don't need a reservation.

If you get there 30 minutes before the ferry, you're really gambling. Depending on weekend traffic (which increases in the summer), getting there 30 minutes before the ferry departs could mean having a long wait for the next ferry. I've had it happen to me both ways; I've gotten on easily, and I've waited for 2-3 hours. To be safe, get there an hour before the ferry leaves.

The reservations come with strict rules as they are in high demand in the summer especially for weekends. One 3-4 sailing wait will make that $15 worth it, provided you don't get lost and are not late.
