Speaking of literature, people should read The Devil's Teeth. It discusses the 6 month period that the Farralon Islands are infested with the largest number of Great Whites in the world. Very interesting read. The Pacific Ocean in Northern California can be downright scary.

As a scuba diver, I am not scared of most sharks. Great white, mako, bull, tiger and hammerhead would make me nervous though. I have been diving in australia and seen little reef sharks and actually wanted to get closer. I would love to be on a shark dive where they feed them (not in a cage either). Sharks hate bubbles, and since divers carry air around with them, its very easy to make bubbles. Also, if you find yourself being eaten by a shark and are clear-headed enough to take action, go for the eyes or gills. However, you are more likey to die in a plane crash than to be attacked by a shark. And youre more likey to die walking somewhere than in a plane. And since most of you arent gonna give up walking of flying, I dont see how you would give up something as fun as going to the beach.

these guys are donating it to science. hammerheads are up there on the man-eating list behing makos and great whites.

last week a great white was caught in 300 ft of water not far from Ft. Lauderdale.

Why didn't this hit the news or anything? I would think a great white off the coast of Florida who raise some eyebrows...

Driving down the street and seeing that shark had to be the most ridiculous thing ever. That's definitely something you don't see everyday.

I've been out to the Farralon's by boat two times- they're about two hours west of San Francisco. We were out there fishing for rock cod- and for those who have never done it before, usually there are predatory ling cod in the same areas- it's relatively common to have a ling cod eat the rock cod (and hook himself) before you can get the small rock cod up to the boat through sometimes 150-200 feet of water. On two occasions on the boats we were on, there was progression from rock cod (which without seeing you can identify, the largest I've ever seen was probably two pounds tops) to a harder strike from a ling, to a "oh holy crap" that snapped the line somewhere in between.

The general advice (albeit I think it's relatively joking) that the crew will give you out at the Farralons- don't fall in.

I was deep sea fishing off of Cancun about two years ago. I dont know what fish we were using for bait, we basically caught it on the way out there. I hooked a blue marlin and fought it for about 30 minutes before it broke the line. My buddy brought in two baracuda's. Nasty creatures.

Yet another creature that gets a bad image. They are very scared of people, but are very curious. They are especially drawn to shiney things since their eyes are so bad. But the majority of the time if a baracuda is swimming towards you, it is just cause he cant see what you are.

You learn it when you become a dive professional. Also, if you cant learn it from experience, you might as well learn about it so when you do get there, you can enjoy it more.

It turns out that the shark was pregnant with 56 pups. I hope the "fight" was worth it.
