Catching a 1,280 lb. hammerhead

For those who do enjoy freshwater or salt water fishing or deep sea fishing or whatever, I bet some of y'all have already heard about this Florida angler catching a possible record 1,280 lb. hammerhead which is 14 1/2 foot long. It sounded like the angler and his buddies fought for about 5 hours to reel that in.

dude was in a boat all by himself, caught it on a 25 lb stingray. luckily his buddy was near by, boarded his vessel and helped him bring it in. took them 5 hours, dragged them all over the place.

What do you do with a shark that big? Are hammerheads good eating? As my Dad always used to say, "Catch and realease boys, catch and release."

Not that this in anyway is going to bring about honest replies, but anybody got any big fish stories?

My largest was a 400 lbs. Bull Shark off Louisiana in August.

these guys are donating it to science. hammerheads are up there on the man-eating list behing makos and great whites.

last week a great white was caught in 300 ft of water not far from Ft. Lauderdale.

I really don't have an exact figure, but I read last night that the record for catching a BIG fish- a shark weighing around 2,000 lbs in 1959 off the coast near Australia. Of course, it did not say anything about the boat being towed by the shark. :wink:

As for the hammerhead, the story explained that the boat was pulled about 12 miles from that area it was caught, but I am sure Danny Hogan and others will clarify on that. I can imagine those guys fighting to stay on the deck while trying to reel in the hammerhead.

Why didn't this hit the news or anything? I would think a great white off the coast of Florida who raise some eyebrows...

Read the book Close to Shore. It is about the great white attacks off the Jersey shore in 1919. One attack occured in a freshwater river, some two miles from the ocean. The bull and the tiger shark are actually more aggresive towards man since they come into contact with man moe often than the great white. Any takers on where the breed ground for Atlnatic great whites are? Just off Montauk, Long Island, NY. That Gulf Stream heats the waters up for them, they can eat and and breed for months.

When I was living in Sydney, I remember the shark nets that line some of the nicest beaches down there. It the jellyfish don'tget you down there, the sharks seem to. Easy way to avoid shark attacks, ya know, don't go in the water.

"The biggest Great White ever caught was a female of 6.4 meters, which was caught off Cuba in 1945. It weighed 3312 kilos and its girth reached 4.5 meters; several lorries were needed to tow and transport it. The record specimen are always female, since in the sharks, females have larger measurements than males."

There are pics on that site of a 1.6 tonne great white.

About 6 years ago we were out surfing & boarding back home (wrightsville beach, nc) when a kid about 50 feet away had a chunk of his foot taken off. We figured lightning doesn't strike the same place twice so we stayed out for a couple of hours more. In any case, the kid only had local anesthesia and filmed his own surgery.

We get mostly bull shark attacks, but people catch lots of the smaller dogfish around the area, and occasionally tigers & makos off the coast.
