Ohh, no love for Torrington. I grew up outside of Hartford(Unionville) and spent my formative years there. Since then I have Lived in ME, New Haven, San Diego, Salt Lake, and now the Sacramento area. In my experience, there are all types in all places. There are really nice parts of CT, and there are really bad ones too. There are really nice parts of CA and UT, and there are really bad parts(although you will never find a ghetto the quality of CA or CT in Utah, much to the chagrin of the poser gangstas in utah).

And I think hard hittin' New Britain belongs on your honorable mention list at least.

Hard Hittin' New Britain is tough... but I feel a lot of that toughness is bravado. Bottom line, I wouldn't mix it up with anyone in a Caldor parking lot in Torrington... nothing but trouble can come of that.

Actually, it's quite classic in the way Connecticut is divided near Hartford.

West Hartford is the most rich, snotty area north of New Canaan/Westport/Darien... while East Hartford is predominately hispanic and one of the most crime filled areas on the east coast. Both cities meet up downtown where insurance companies rule the roost! Go Connecticut!

Ahem, Dan. Being a graduate of Hall High in West Hartford and a longtime resident of the area, I must disagree with your assertions. West Hartford is an inner-ring suburb with an aging population. There are some well-to-do areas, but there are a lot of working class neighborhoods too (such as mine!). You are overlooking areas such as Avon and Simsbury, where a lot of the stuffy new money is going.
The Hartford area suffers from a lot of housing discrimination, with West and East Hartford having ridiculously low black populations, compared to the city that they immediately border (hmmm, something must be going on there). When I was in HS, Bloomfield was the only suburb that practiced open housing, so minorities that were looking to escape the slums of the North End took advantage of the opportunity, and all ended up in the same town. Our games against Weaver HS (the North End HS) used to be dreaded, since the team was all black. Yikes! Now the reputation has moved to Bloomfield I guess. Given it is one of the only opportunities for Bloomfield kids to "interact" with their suburban brethren, I'm not surprised that they enjoy putting it to them on the field - it's one of the few places where they can be superior.
Hartford is still a very racially-divided city, and it would be derided if it was in the South. It's my hometown, but I'm happy to now be living in a state with a well-respected major metropolitan area and racial harmony - Detroit.
