Coaches face suspension for wins of 50-plus points

Postby Jolly Roger on Thu May 25, 2006 12:06 pm

Genck must be behind this

HARTFORD, Conn. -- High school football coaches in Connecticut will have to be good sports this fall -- or risk a suspension.

The football committee of the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference, which governs high school sports, is adopting a "score management" policy that will suspend coaches whose teams win by more than 50 points.

A rout is considered an unsportsmanlike infraction and the coach of the offending team will be disqualified from coaching the next game, said Tony Mosa, assistant executive director of the Cheshire, Conn.-based conference.

How soon until this creeps into lacrosse (recall the 30-?? JC playoff game this year as well as the uproar surrounding TAMU scores a few seasons back)

I used to hate it when teams stop trying. It really comes down to winning with class. Everyone knows about the secret deals that football coaches make towards the end of a game. When a team is up big in a game they should start playing players that rarely see the field and start running their base offense and stop some of the pressure on defense. Football is a sport that allows itself to a lop sided game even if a team backs off. I think this rule is stupid. I have seen teams get blown out, but you can tell when the dogs have been called off.

What happens when a team who is just trying to run the ball and run down the clock keeps scoring because the other team is simply that awful? Are these teams supposed to take a knee 3 times and punt?

At most I believe that it should be reviewed by someone. At most.

saw this on another forum:

"what if you are losing 49-0 and the other team's coach is a prick, do you take a safety to get him benched for the next game?"

there is a term for this type of thing that i can't use here.

Think about what you just said for a minute, and then perhaps edit your post or remove it altogether.

This rule is for Bloomington High School in Hartford. A few season ago, they beat Manchester High School (near my home town) 82-6 and played the starters to the end. They are a predominately African-American and Hispanic American high school and they have been known to take out their rage on suburban W.A.S.P. high schools.

Apparently the white schools have had enough of having their butts handed to them... and we end up with rules like this.

I think it's a ridiculous rule and if Kent gets any penalties for it this season on our way to another New England Championship, then so be it...

I think you mean Bloomfield, CT. They are pretty nasty and they do love to take it to the whities. Growing up playing football in RI all I knew about connecticut football was Bloomfield and how they steam rolled teams. I remember in 02 when East Providence beat them in some ridiculously high scoring game it was huge news for little rhody. But I wouldn't be surprised if they were one of the causes for this rule...running up the score in the Jack Cochran tradition.

Actually, it's quite classic in the way Connecticut is divided near Hartford.

West Hartford is the most rich, snotty area north of New Canaan/Westport/Darien... while East Hartford is predominately hispanic and one of the most crime filled areas on the east coast. Both cities meet up downtown where insurance companies rule the roost! Go Connecticut!

Yes, I did mean Bloomfield and not Bloomington. Bloomington is a throw back to Minnesota... man I need to stop moving.
