Whipple Joins FSU Coaching Staff

When Rory Whipple returns to Harkins Field in the fall, he won't be coaching from the opposition's side. Instead, he'll be on Florida State's side as the team's new offensive coordinator.

"He brings tremendous experience and maturity to the program," said Seminole Head Coach Bill Harkins. "He has seen great lacrosse and played great lacrosse, all of which is great experience."

Whipple has spent the last seven seasons as the head coach of Division II's Bryant University and has compiled a 75-40 overall record and a 46-16 Northeast-10 conference record. In his first year as Bryant's head coach, he earned New England Division II Coach of the Year honors. In 2001, the team's second year as a varsity sport, Bryant was ranked No. 6. The following season, Bryant maintained a No. 6 ranking and won its first Eastern College Athletic Conference Division II championship.

So this guy dropped his job at Bryant to come to Florida State? How much are you paying your assistant coaches down there? Health insurance and TIAA/CREF too?

Not subtle at all...by all accounts, they want to be D1, and very quickly.

what does it take for an IA program to make this jump?

. . .as many as we can get. Competent coaches can be tough to find. I've met coach Whipple, and a few of his players, he'll be a great asset at FSU.

It is an interesting point though. I get a few requests each year to help us out and I explain the situation we face in terms of practice times, the HUGE salary ($0), etc... As a proponent of the growth here in Ga I recommend they look to high school or youth coaching or even officiaiting. Lacrosse is at a critical point in Ga and I don't want to "hog" coaches. So, yes, I believe there is alimit to the number of coaches- at least in my area. Don't get me wrong- I would love the extra help but I also respect where there is a more urgent need.

I wish lacrosse was at any point in Alabama. Alabama's league is pretty low on the totum pole. I don't know of any schools outside of Birmingham that have any teams. And the ones in B'ham are really struggling. I think most of that is due to coaching as well as awareness of the sport. I know from a U-15 Tourny we (Auburn) played in this season, that there is a developing group, but by no means is there maturing going on.

what brendan means... seeing as he is in europe and probably in a 24.7 druekn stuper... is that we played the university of alabama as the "highlight" game of a U-15 tournament in b'ham... he's right though the program is getting bigger... just not right now...

and in response to FSU's new asst. is congrat to harkin and the team for a great addition. and I do think that they are making thei rpush for DI i mean if the whole duke thing plays out the way none of us want to there could be a slight chance of no more duke lacrosse in which case which ACC team will take its place??? <<insert FSU here>> its a long shot, but I don't blame coach harkins for being prepared if it does come to that. hopefully the end of the duke case will be one of many apologies to duke and its program... hopefully
