Go Vols! My alumni pride is at an all-time high!

McGill is also a great time but is Canadian, so why are they on the list?

No idea why McGill is on there, but they are. I would definitely advise people to head to Santa Barbara for a weekend. You may never come back.

When did hazing become cool again?

My bartender sense is going crazy right now. On number 5, what is pepperment snapps? Maybe all my bottles of schnapps are spelled wrong...

To get back on topic...you don't have to be forcing someone to do something for it to be considered hazing. Any of you who were ever pledgemasters should know that. I suggest everyone talks to their players about the dangers of posting these kinds of photos because it is no joke. Just ask those boys up at Marquette.

That being said, Jason Whitlock posted another fabulous column on Page 2 about this issue.

Very interesting article. I cant wait for some premeir football or basketball team to be in a similar situation (god forbid) and see how the college handles it after all this has happened. My favorite line from that article has to be, " I'm serious. Why isn't this seen as progress? Women in large groups now behave just as poorly as men."

I think the legendary coach of Lafayette Lacrosse said it best, "You cannot base your life on the whims of some 18 year old kid..."

Seriously- What is the obsession with photographing everything? I am surprised that it has not become tired and worn out yet...

Digital cameras and photo sharing sites are the only real difference. This stuff has been going on forever. The only reason they make national news is some people have no fear of MySpace or don't comprehend that anyone other than their friends looks at these pics.

You use to have to show up at practice with an envelope of 4x6's or look at a cork board in someone's hallway to see the debauchery of the night before. Now you can post it around the world before the party even ends.

Here I go dating my self, but I'm amazed at the younger set (are we at Generation Z yet?) and what they will post on the internet. People in my office have MySpace pages with rather scandalous pictures posted along side the name of the firm for which they work. Not bright. But I digress.

Hazing can be dangerous if taken out of hand but it can also be perfectly fine. It's not PC to say "who cares" to the whole incident, and I respect that people can get out of control and create dangerous situations, but the main problem I see here is people being dumb enough to post these pictures.

And BTW - the first couple weeks of school in SB are some of the best parties you will ever see. Just take a stroll down DP and you'll know.

Poor UCSB girls. They have had news crews swarming them all day. The news got captains phone numbers and emails from websites and have been calling non-stop. The majority of the girls weren't even on the team when the pictures were taken.

The question is how do you punish teams for photos taken two or three years ago. You can punish individuals. Maybe a coach. It doesn't seem fair to suspend a program either. Just some thoughts.

That LMU athletic director is a wise man however, it is the coach's responsibility to try to educate their athletes about the risks involved.

I think that is important to remember how quickly things can spiral out of control when college aged kids and alcohol mix. Forced drinking is no joke. As a member of a fraternity in the late 90s I had a front row seat for all of the efforts to crack down on binge drinking and Greek Life in general (as well as first hand experience with asphyxiating on vomit, not good times). And what was the impetus for the crackdown? All it took was for a couple of kids to go to far and end up dead for knee jerk reactionaries to condem the whole system...you think the Duke scandal is hurting the sport? Wait until you see what happens when some freshmen attackmen at USLIA University doesn't wake up one morning.

Let's be careful not to stick our heads in the sand and plead ignorance to hazing. It's a fine line between head shaving and the hospital.

Article from today's UCSB newspaper:

UCSB Looks Into Case of Alleged Team Hazing

By Aria Miran — Staff Writer
Published Monday May 22, 2006

After seeing photographs on the Internet of what might potentially be hazing, the university has suspended the UCSB Women’s Lacrosse team pending an investigation into the matter.

The photographs in question were posted on www.badjocks.com and were subsequently brought to the attention of university administrators. The website, the slogan for which is “Where COPS meets SportsCenter,” posts articles or pictures documenting alleged illegal activity committed by athletes or their coaches, from little league to professional teams.

Taken in 2004, the eight pictures posted on the site were supposedly obtained from www.webshots.com, and depict various players at a team party, on the playing field or in the hallway of a campus residence hall. In a couple of pictures, some team members appear to be taking shots of alcohol, while in another, two team members lift up their skirts. Other pictures show smiling team members wearing uniforms with writing scrawled across the shirts and on their skin.

According to campus policies, hazing is defined as “any method of initiation or pre-initiation into a student organization or any pastime or amusement engaged in with respect to such an organization which causes, or is likely to cause, bodily danger, physical harm, or personal degradation or disgrace resulting in physical, or mental harm to any student or other person.”
