Early critics seemed happy to try to break "The Da Vinci Code."

Reaction ranged from halfhearted admiration to boredom to derision among journalists at the first press screening of the Ron Howard-Tom Hanks blockbuster in waiting, premiering Wednesday at the Cannes Film Festival and opening worldwide through Friday.

"'Da Vinci' never rises to the level of a guilty pleasure. Too much guilt. Not enough pleasure," wrote critic Kirk Honeycutt in the trade paper The Hollywood Reporter.

Associated Press critic Christy Lemire found the movie "cursory and rushed. ... As sturdy and versatile an actor as Hanks can be, he can't work miracles when he's got nothing to work with."

The Da Vinci Code is receiving less than decent reviews from the first critics to view it. Although it is the most anticipated movie of the summer the critics dont seem to be too fond.

The question is: Will you still go see it?

Yep, I definitely will. I think being a film critic is such a joke. Roger Ebert has given his trademark "thumbs-up" to some horrendous movies, and in turn has given a "thumbs-down" to great movies. How that man is allowed to make millions of dollars and offer insight into what is a good or bad movie is beyond me.

As far as the movie is concerned, my attitude is, who cares what it is about. The "novel" was a page-turner, and I took it at face-value. I am going to see the movie because I enjoyed the story that unfolded in the novel. The fact that people are claiming that the movie/novel is making a mockery of a religion or that people are being duped into believing this novel/movie as truth is beyond comprehension.

From a purely historical point-of-view, if youa re talking about the father, than yes, that would be an accurate movie title. If you are talking about the son, then not so much.

I think I read/saw somewhere over 60 million people read the book, it doesn't matter what the critics say there will be alot of people going to this movie. I know I will be going.

Since when do people listen to movie critics anyways?

Half the time if a critic says its horrible then I just got to go see it because I know it will be great.

60 million readers at $20 a pop... Dan Brown is a very rich man...

I recall reading somewhere that on the book alone (not counting the movie) he has made over 250 million dollars from the Da Vinci Code.

I watch a lot of The History Channel because, well let's leave that alone. Anyway, I'm really enjoying that they have gone into the full court press with shows debunking the theories behind the Da Vinci Code. I didn't read it and don't plan to but I do find it very interesting that a cable channel feels that so many people are buying into a novel as fact that they need to devote hours of programming to showing people that the a novel is a work of fiction.

Of course, if you needed the History Channel to explain to you that the Da Vinci Code is fake you should go back to the garage and start sniffing the glue again.

Now if you want an interesting read on the state of religion in the modern world, I reccommend The End of Faith by Sam Harris (caution: thinking may be required)

History Channel watchers of the world, unite! Then again, I am a man that thinks the books Salt and Cod by Mark Kurlansky as the best I have read in years.


I thought the The Da Vinci Code was good. It was the first fiction book I had read in years. I did not see the ending coming which was great. How can you deny a book that features and albino assassin. Genius!

I read one book that attempted to debunk the Da Vinci Code and it was the most disappointing read ever. It was simply-

"The bible does not reference Jesus being married, and therefore, he was not."

Boring.

I agree. I did like The DaVinci Code, but I've read all four of his books and think I enjoyed it the least of all of them.

As far as the movie goes, it's going to sell millions no matter what some self rightous movie "experts" say. I'm going to it with the mind set that it can't be as good as the book. Then hopefully I will be pleasently surprised.
