When I first got out of college, I worked for a production company that produced the WHC dinner. I worked three of these. I remember one year, I was in the loo standing next to Norm MacDonald and thinking that he was not even funny in real life. It is a huge night in DC, where the tables in the Washington Hilton Ballroom (the largest on the east coast) are filled with the famous, the infamous and the not-so.
It is tradition at this event to roast the president, to have a good time. The selection of Colbert was no joke. Did you not see the president mock himself? This is one night a year, where the WH press corps has a good time. It is the press corps that invites the emcee, not the WH. Try to find the remarks of Laura Bush at last's year dinner. She even had a go at her husband.
The interview with Colbert on last week's 60 Minutes was very good. Thanks Stephen for your tireless search for truthiness. I cannot wait to see you in the big screen version of Strangers With Candy.
