Championship Sunday - discussion/predictions

SSC and Texas

Postby SSCLAX on Tue May 02, 2006 9:00 pm

We're sorry we weren't able to attend. Due to late planning couldn't get the school to let us miss finals so we could go. We were all looking forward to going, and were all dissapointed by the schools decision to let us go down. Honestly we didn't know what to expect at the beginning of the season being in the position we were in, but next year we have the schools support and will be preparing a lot sooner in the year for the Texas trip, if we go or not.

Only if they informed the EB before the playoffs that they would not be able to attend. In that case, the loser of the championship team (in this case, New Haven) would be declared the conference champion and receive the AQ.

Why would they have been allowed to compete in the PCLL playoffs if they knew they couldn't/wouldn't go to Texas if they won the whole thing? Doesn't seem fair to the other PCLL Div. B teams...

Obviously I am unaffiliated now, but if the EB had known beforehand that they wouldn' tbe able to attend, it simply would've invoked the "Coast Guard" rule which allows them in the playoffs but does not give them the opportunity to technically become PCLL Division B Champions. It was the best solution we could come up at the meeting. I don't think it is the best situation, though, since it makes the championship game meaningless. I think I am more in favor of not allowing them in the playoffs at all.

The EB was not aware of their situation before hand. This all came up on Monday. It is very fortunate b/c it not only affects our league this year, but next as we will most likely lose our AQ spot for next season.

From a national stand-point, I completely agree with that decision, but what really kills me is the effect it will have on next year's teams. I would hope the PCLL in-turn takes their conference playoff eligibility away as well.

When you say we (the PCLL) will lose our AQ spot does this mean Div A teams as wells as division B teams will lose the automatic qualifier? Or just Div B?

I would assume it's just Division B

You guys have nothing to be sorry for. You had a great first season in the MDIA. Won a title. If you didn't win, the other programs would be in this same predicament. No Div B team is older than 2 seasons old. The truth is, the Div B needs a little time to grow. Not having the pressure of the AQ next year will allow you all to focus on your teams and building your programs, without jumping into the deep end. In 2008, you will all be stronger for it. And you tried to go, you had plans, preparations were moving along, things just went south. Happens sometimes.

Since recieving word that we wouldnt be able to attend, I've already talked to my coach about getting things together for next year and we have the schools support next year to go. We are going to make deposits no matter what after our 2nd division win ( if we get that far) just to make sure if we do make it again, the same thing won't happen and we'll be able to attend Texas.

Will you guys be able to leave the state next year? If you guys don't play any OOC games, you will lose out at any chance (by rule) of an at-large bid and the PCLL has lost their Div. B AQ.

I'm pretty sure were going to be able to, our coach was hoping to get a weekend game at rochester where we play rochester one night and umaine another so that way all 3 teams can save time on traveling back and forth.

I think Gregg means that you need to play 3 out of conference games in order to qualify for an at-large bid. Since the PCLL will likely lose its division B AQ, the only way into the tournament is an at-large. So that would entail playing Buffalo, for instance, when you travel out to play Rochester. You'd need to play 3 teams that aren't in the PCLL.
