UMD 8, Minnesota 4 FINAL

UMD lead 6 to 3 after 3 quarters. Heard the weather was miserable at NSC today.

The UMD - U of M game was a very hardly fought game that at many points could have gone either way. UofM keeper made a ton of saves and UMD defense played quite well, especially the poles. 'Sota had numerous opportunites right in front, especially in the 3rd and 4th that if finished would have dramatically changed the game. UMD had numerous conduct fouls, mostly for yelling at the ref which is really unexcusable when you are trying to protect the lead. Weather was crappy but the UMD - Minnesota game didnt disappoint as it usually doesnt. Congradulations to UMD. Sorry to have missed you Huge Eug :D

IMO the score was alot closer than it should have been.

Sure the U had a few opportunities, but Duluth had many more (if you want to argue the "if the U made their shots...", you have to also argue the same way for Duluth, which had a ton more opportunities). They said I think at half time UMD had 19 shots vs. 5 for the U.

I think all the the 4 goals for the U were man up (maybe 3 ups with 1 fast break), their regular offense was absolutely shut down. Ziebol handled Bice today no problems, and Maubach is a fantastic pole. Was also interesting the U practiced the "Gilman" clear. I was very suprised at how often the defense just hucked it down field.

Good game regardless, and the U did come to play as they had improved since the 15-3 showing earlier this season.

P.S. what happened with the goal that got waved off in the 3rd? No one really knew what happened except UMD scored then all of a sudden UofM was man up and the goal was waved. It didn't look like anyone was even near the crease, it was a VERY solid fast break.

championship game

Postby gopherlax27 on Sun Apr 30, 2006 9:57 pm

thanks for the detailed game summary riss. I wish I could have been there today. Sounded like a typical hard fought game between two great rivals. I think that with both teams having a young core of players, the rivalry should continue to be a strong one with hopefully the 'U' (Miami) winning a few more in years to come. Good luck to Duluth in Plano......too bad the Nationals couldnt have been in Blaine again this year.

In the 5th Place game:

ISU - 9
Kato - 7

Another close game that came down to the final minutes. Also, interesting point, before the game the refs asked the captains of both teams if they wanted to go with a running time instead of stop. Both teams refused and chose stop clock for sheer love of the game! I like the Lax in the UMLL.
