Help with Division B Individual Honors

Postby gcclax33 on Fri Apr 21, 2006 10:29 am

I know that the process has started by which we'll be voting on individual honors. I was hoping that we could start a thread discussing some players in order to get a consensus heading into this voting. I feel that some healthy discussion might prevent any incredibly obvious omissions or mistakes.

So, if you could reply to this email with some players that you played AGAINST that you are certain deserve to be honored. Please don't just hype up your own teammates.

The best players we've played so far (we have not played Ferris St., Dayton, Taylor, Hope, UMD):

Defense:
Free Shaw, Calvin
Adam Seibert, Carnegie Mellon

Attack:
Alex Knecht, Carnegie Mellon
Chris Idema, Grand Valley St.
TJ Preparato, IUP

Goalie:
Ben Levine, IUP

I tried to keep this list short, and I didn't include any midfielders (I just don't know which ones stick out, so I'd appreciate some feedback there specifically.)

Hopefully with each team making submissions for thier own teams, and then the rest of the league voting on that compilation. We'll avoid some of the issues we've had in the past. You bring up a good point though. Each team hasn't seen a large number of players. The game day sheets have been a huge contributer to my accuracy marking opposing players. Much better than the chicken scratch I was usually writing down after a game. Then trying to decipher the notes late in the season was always interesting. Typically, what I try to do is speak with the team and get some input back from them on this subject. As a coach, I'm watching the flow of game, situations, positioning, sets, etc...........I have to have an extra set of eyes, because my style doesn't bode well to grading the other team's players individually.

I'm sort of surprised to see one player get two honors?

Did ferris not turn in their nominations or something. We played them and Calvin and there were definitely guys on Ferris, that one would assume would be All Conference. Particularly, that one middie with the cannon, I think he was #1

Yeah the final results are questionable to say the least, but I think a better process will be devised by next year hopefully.

As far as I can tell, Ferris State didn't receive any awards because they didn't complete the nomination form that was sent out. We were warned this would happen if that form wasn't completed and on time. If I were one of those Ferris guys I would be pretty ticked that someone didn't take 5 minutes to do that.

Players listed twice

Postby hoopty151 on Wed Apr 26, 2006 9:17 pm

I wonder why I received Honorable Mention as LSM (Dayton) and am listed on the Excel Spreadsheet sent to coaches as also being nominated as defense and LSM for Taylor? My teammate, Kevin Kirpatrick is also listed as having some nominations as a Taylor player. We both go to dayton. hmm

Ferris Nominations

Postby laxfan91 on Wed Apr 26, 2006 11:21 pm

As far as I know, Ferris never received a ballot to vote for nominations. They submitted there team nominations, but never got a chance to vote overall in the league. My guess is the forms were not sent to the right people.

Micheal Greeson who is a good D, got 1st team LSM. He played one game as long stick middie, vs NMU, total this year. My coach said that he wasnt sure why Micheal got this award as LSM.

As far as our middie/attack man Matt wiebenga, he started the season out as attack but switched half way during the season to middie because of some injuries. So maybe some teams that voted for him saw him as an attack some as a Middie. Im not sure though obviously because im not incharge of voting.

I see some complaints here, but I think people have to keep things in perspective too. Yes, there was some mistakes. Ferris had guys on the nomination form that were labeled under Taylor. Some others were missed labeled. But, if the voting was accurate on the coaches front, then the voters would have known this was the case. Also, some of the complaints here aren't the leagues fault. If Ferris submitted nominations, then they saw the email about the process of what needed to be done. Followups should have taken place, to ensure that proper procedures were followed. Is it disappointing absolutely. Did I still vote for some of their players? Of course! If people were truly aware of the "best" players then write-ins could have happen. Also, if some were voted for in spots that they didn't truly play. Then possibly the coach is at fault for even nominating them in the first place at that position.

Is the system 100%? Absolutely not. Are some politics involved? Sure! Could it be improved and will it be? I'm sure. Our team had guys nominated in the wrong spots, under the wrong team name, and higger performing players were passed up too. Overall, the whole voting and awards come down to the coaches. Period! I spotted the inaccuracy with Ferris and sent 2 emails out to the whole league on the B side. People were aware of this, as I received replies. I'm just always suprised that things like this get so much buzz. It's like watching my team decide T-shirt colors. I wish I had that much excitement when we're running a man-up drill. Critisim is easy. Offer solutions. Before solutions can be offered, we need the coaches in the league to do a better job of marking players and performances. With so many operating as one man shows on the side lines, we'll see small improvements until people recieve some help. Possibly watching some game tape?

Lastly, some teams in the league played more CCLA games. Thus seeing more players. This has an impact on things too. The offensive side of the ball is easy to vote on. Just look at the stats right? That is what most do. the tough part is the D side of the ball and the LSM's, and defensive middies. Or league is very young and deep at some spots. There's going to be controversy to come............
