Assists matter. Ask anyone/team that scores from cutting.

Assists do matter, I will not argue that. Sportsmanship matters too.

Clearly, people just look at points posted in the database, or else they'd know that Gentry was breaking ankles left and right all season from X Attack, NOT midfield.

I found that interesting also, Benji, but according to Tech's USLMDIA roster Gentry is listed as a Midfielder. Just stating the facts...

That brings up two concerns I have...

1) Coaches might be voting blindly for players, based purely on statistics

2) Gentry being voted as a midfielder potentially opens up another spot for an attackmen, as well as takes away the opportunity for a midfielder.

RD1 wrote:Reid would overpower Gentry easily. Gentry has more assists wow.... People that keep track of assists are people that can't score.

First, when would Singleton, a midfielder, ever be in any position to overpower Gentry, an attackmen. He certainly wasn't when Gentry put up 3 goals and an assist on UNT.

Second, if you don't think the ability to get the ball to an open man is important, then obviously you in no way have any grasp whatsoever of lacrosse ... or even modern team sports and athletics.

I am not saying assists are not important, I just think people that brag about them are cute. The ability to get the ball to an open man is a basic part of the game. You're right about me sucking at lacrosse though. I don't even know why Zac let me score 6 goals on him a couple years ago. That sure was nice of him.

Mikey, I'll be the first to tell you that Reid would prefer to be playing in the final four than to win any awards. However, he certainly deserves his first team award. You sure have seen a lot of these guys play for a guy who lives in Long Island. Honestly, I don't know much about Tabb, but I do know that Reid was dominant in every game he played this year. Not only did he lead the league in goals, but he consistently won face-offs. It is too bad that UNT has to defend their players every year. If they truly don't deserve any of these honors then why are people voting for them? As Karl pointed out, UNT doesn't have the most players on the all-star team. You'll notice they don't have a single attackman that even made the honorable mention. I remember a couple of years ago a kid named Shearer made first team from a mediocre LSU team and everyone got upset about that. But the truth was that he was the best middie in the league. Reid and Corbin are a couple of the hardest working guys in the league and they shouldn't have to defend anything they earn.

Just curious, what is your definition of a dominant player? I could name a few players that I think we would all agree were dominant in their day. I don't think Singleton would fall in the category. I've seen UNT play a few times this season, and I don't even know who he is. Come to think of it, I still don't even know who Chris Files is.

Midfielder or Attackman

Postby Karl Lynch on Tue Apr 25, 2006 2:30 pm

Who classifies a player as a midfielder or an attackman?

Gentry (Tech), Swann (UT), and Emberey (UNT) are all listed by their schools as midfielders. All three spent significant time at attack.

All three made All-League at midfield. Between the three players you had two first teams and a second team. I think the voters did a pretty good job of recognizing these three players as special talents in the LSA.

welcome to politics, baby

Postby swampthing on Tue Apr 25, 2006 3:05 pm

regardless of the controversy, everyone knows when you play a team who you have to look out for, and you know when a team is doing that to you, and that respect is more than a title on a forum that will be lost.

anyhow, is that LSU honorable mention pole supposed to be saladino from aTm? that would make more sense i'd think

also, has anybody else gotten a magazine from lax.com for this month?? i swear these things are better than magazines i pay for and its FREE

Benji, some creatively deceptive stat analysis. I like it, but you seemed fit to leave out some games and included both our two games against UT. Was that out of convenience or trying to maintain the appearance of impartiality?

Singleton's games against other LSA voting members may tell us something interesting as well:

Rice: 8 goals
Baylor: 7 goals
SMU: 5 goals, 2 assists.

Here are some more stats to complete the picture:

Reid Singleton v. #18 Chapman - 3 goals
Corbin Emberey v. #18 Chapman - 2 goals

Reid Singleton v. #24 UCLA - 4 goals
Corbin Emberey v. #24 UCLA - 3 assists

Again, I think when you look at everyone's stats after a complete year, you will discover that the voters got it right.

anyone who played in highschool should know that name recognition and stats have more to do with this than who is the best. Tabb is the best player on A&M and one of the best in the league, even if he isn't on the first team.
So relax everone you dont have to play my guy is better than yours, this a team game remember. if your motivation is individual accolades then you are in it for the wrong reasons.
and props to the unt has-beens for finding their way back into the controversy that used to be about them
