Long Island lacrosse schools Torrey Pines

April 19, 2006

For 41 minutes, the Torrey Pines High boys lacrosse team swapped scores with its visitor from Long Island. Neither squad could manage more than a one-goal lead as the schools squared off in a rematch of the Falcons' 2004 upset of the Garden City Trojans.

You really need to appreciate the fact that this was reported in the San Diego Union, the largest newspaper in the county, not too long ago, you never would have read about this.

What are you guys talking about? High school articles have been posted in this forum innumerable times. Several WCLL alumni attended Torrey Pines and La Costa Canyon, so it does pertain to the WCLL.

I was being a little sarcastic (does not translate well on msg boards). I would actually like to see more high school reports. These are the WCLL feeder schools.

Growth of the game, growth of the game.

For those that didn't follow prior years, Garden City is usually a well respected NY team. They came out west two years ago and played a close game with Poway and were defeated by Torrey Pines. It was viewed by some as a big win for west coast lacrosse and by others as an aberration as Garden City was supposedly on a down year.

With the east coast games this year on LCC's trip and GC's three games out here, it gives some form of measuring stick of the programs on either coast.

Judging by this year's results (GC beat Coronado 17-0 last night), it looks like we out west still have some work to do to before we can claim we have caught up with the top eastern teams.

And yes, Poway, La Costa Canyon, Torrey Pines, Coronado and others have supplied considerable WCLL talent over the years.

Also, thanks to CIF status the community at large now recognizes high school lacrosse athletes as athletes, not some fringe group like the fencing society. As these players graduate and move on to WCLL teams, it helps the visibility of the programs.

Now hopefully Poway can make a competitive game out of it tomorrow.

Wade, I heard the Coronado game was not even close. Do you have any info about that? In Northern California, SI lost today to South Side, who is ranked #25th nationally 10-3. Tied at half 3-3, but then SI did not score again. Too bad about the loss, but it's great to see top high school teams coming to play California teams.

What ranking is that? On Laxpower, South Side is the 30th-ranked team in New York state, but not among the top 200 high school teams nationally.

I believe that ranking came from Inside Lacrosse, which is a little more accurate than LaxPower. LaxPower's mathematical formulas can't account for the fact that many east coast high schools are are still at the beginning of their seasons. The West Coast schools have been playing since the beginning of February.
