How does the tie breaker work?

How does the tie breaker work?

Postby Bluevelvet on Sun Apr 16, 2006 6:47 pm

HOW DOES THE TIEBREAKER REALLY WORK?

3 way tie in the WCLL South.(ASU, AZ and UCSD).
They are all 2-1.
They are all 1-1 vs. each other.

Tie breaker is goal differential vs. each other.
AZ is +4
UCSD is 0
ASU is -4

Does the tie breaker kick out the last team (ASU)? I think this is what happened last year.
OR
After Arizona wins the tiebreaker, do we go back to the top to break the tie between UCSD and ASU?
In that case, the tiebreaker is head to head competition. ASU beat UCSD and would win the tiebreaker.

HOW DOES IT REALLY WORK? Anyone know?

Excellent question. Usually a tiebreaker determines who the winner of the tie is, not the loser. In this example, Arizona is the winner of the 3 way tie, so they are the Division champ. It would seem that now you still have a tie for the the #2 spot, since AZ is no longer in the picture. As you point out, in that case ASU would be in and UCSD would be out. I know if I was the ASU coach, I would be posing this question too. Looks like someone in the WCLL leadership needs to address this. I don't know what the answer is.

Last year, it was the same situation with the same teams in the WCLL South.

But on the other hand, if all 3 teams are tied. Wouldn't it be wrong to use 2 different criteria/tiebreakers to determine the top 2 teams?
I don't know the answer but I agree the board needs to decide soon.

Was ASU dropped then? wouldn't that happen again (not meaning disrespect just curious)?

Yes, ASU was dropped but it may not have been the correct thing to do. I really don't know.

How do you know if the WCLL board hasn't already decided? They probably will announce something shortly.

The WCLL board does not have to decide anything.

Bluevelvet is correct:

3 way tie in the WCLL South.(ASU, AZ and UCSD).
They are all 2-1.
They are all 1-1 vs. each other.

Tie breaker is goal differential vs. each other.
AZ is +4
UCSD is 0
ASU is -4

Thus 1 seed is AZ, 2 seed is UCSD

Last year the exact same thing happened

3 way tie in the WCLL South.(ASU, AZ and UCSD).
They are all 2-1.
They are all 1-1 vs. each other.

Tie breaker was goal differential vs. each other.
UCSD was +5
Arizona was -1
ASU was -4

That's why UCSD was the 1 seed, AZ was the 2 seed.

I second Albert's analysis, he is correct, no further action by the WCLL BOD is required.
