WCLL Playoffs

Postby Bluevelvet on Wed Apr 12, 2006 9:35 pm

I can't think of a reason why UCSD would want to finish second in the WCLL South and travel to UCSB and face a revenge minded Gaucho team that can't wait for payback against the Tritons?
In addition, if UCSD comes in second in the South and goes to UCSB and somehow manages to beat the Gauchos, they get Sonoma in the semi's.
On the other hand, if UCSD wins the South and stays home, they get UCLA or LMU and then get the winner of the Central division (probably Cal Poly) as their only obstacle to the Finals.

It's a no brainer. UCSD wants to win the South. They will try to beat SDSU by 11 and then hope for a one goal Arizona win over ASU. They play SDSU first, so there is nothing they can do about the game in the desert but wait.

I just saw that the final of the UCSD and SDSU game was 12-5, what does that do with the tie breakers, since they didn't win by 11?

If Arizon beats ASU by one goal, UCSD is out. Any other result and UCSD is #2 in the WCLL south. The winner of the AZ v. ASU game is #1 in the south and the loser is out.

LMU is still alive for the LA division.

Good point.

G1: North #1 Sonoma vs. Central #2 Cal
G2: Central #1 Cal Poly vs. North #2 Davis
G3: LA #1 UCLA/UCSB winner vs. South #2 UCSD (or ASU)
G4: South #1 AZ/ASU winner vs. UCLA/UCSB loser (or LMU)

UCSD is out if AZ beats ASU by exactly one goal.

UCLA is out of they lose to LMU and UCSB.

On another note, think Cal or Davis will crack the next top 25 poll? Cal got a few votes in the last poll, and has won three games since then.

Unless ASU loses by only one goal, and then they would be the WCLL South #2 seed and travel to Santa Barbara (if SB's games turn out as anticipated). Interesting situation for ASU. Obviously, they would much rather win and get a home game, but they can also lose by 1 and still make the playoffs.

After the incredible season that UCSD has had, it would be downright shocking if they failed to make the WCLL playoffs. In addition, if UCSD didn't make the playoffs, we could have the unprecedented scenario of a WCLL team earning a bid to the National Championships without making it into the first round of the WCLL playoffs. A few WCLL teams have made it to Nationals without making it to the WCLL Final Four (Cal and Cal Poly in 2002, Chico in 2003, others?), but I am fairly certain no team has earned an at large bid without at least making it into the first round of the league playoffs.

Just something I realized that is kind of cool...if UCLA and UCSB take the LA division and UCSD makes it in the South, all UC's would have made the playoffs in A division, and 5/8 of playoff teams would be UC's...might be a stretch at this point that UCLA UCSB and UCSD all make it, but either way pretty cool. Also, I am not sure how the playoffs work in the B division, but it looks like Irvine locked up number 2 in their division.

The top B division team in the South plays the top B division in the North for the B division championship, nothing for second place in each B division, except for bragging rights.

Just a little note on the WCLL final four since there isn't much information out there. The games will be played at noon and 3:30 on Saturday and Sunday in Harder Stadium. The stadium is located across the street from the PIT, and it is hard to miss. Ticket prices are $8 for adults and $5 for student/youth. Tickets will get you into both of the games. I'm not sure about the price of parking since the lots are run by the university, but Isla Vista is a short walk from the stadium and it is free to park on the street.
For those who have never been to UCSB before, it is 10 minutes north of the city of Santa Barbara, so if you are looking for hotels close to UCSB, Goleta is closer.

Beast-
Any youth tournaments this year?
Can you get UCSB weekend parking passes?
What's the story on programs?
Will there be vendors this year?
What about food?

We are keeping it simple. There is not going to be a youth tournament. There are weekend parking passes. The parking kiosk will explain it all. If you know a UCSB student, they can get you a free parking pass for nights and weekends. There are programs and there is supposed to be a vendor. A concession stand will be provided by the university. Hotdogs, popcorn, drinks, etc.
