South Park and Family Guy

Postby benji on Wed Apr 05, 2006 9:46 pm

Ok so tonight's South Park featured a nation-wide (in South Park land) protest against Family Guy.

Is there a certain degree of bad blood between South Park and Family Guy or do you think the episode was merely one of parody in good fun?

The way it looked to me, they're pissed that some people think that the humor in both shows is the same, while they think their writing is better and their jokes are applicable to the storyline of the show, not just a random reference to someone or something. Since they feel that way, they decided to bring it up in tonight's episode. I'm a big Family Guy fan (I watched it back in 1999 before the first cancellation), but I can't say that South Park was off-base in their assessment of how Family Guy is written.

Im in the same boat as you. Im a fan of both shows, I was definitely one of the few who watched FG before it got cancelled the first time. But my thing is that not only is South Park written better, but it pertains more to current events and doesn't have completely random or off-based jokes. With this in mind, I still think Family Guy is one of the funniest shows on television, simply because it is so random and off the wall. I think last nights episode was simply a way for south park to distance itself from being put in the same category as Family Guy

Do you think we could expect a "retaliation" from Seth McFarlane and the Family Guy crew? I think thier take on South Park could be pretty funny/ interesting.

Yeah but it will take them forever to do, the one thing that I dont understand about Family Guy is why it takes them so long to make new episodes, its like a crap shoot every sunday whether or not it will be a new one.

On a side note pertaining to this issue.....is everyone aware that Comedy Central is no longer allowed to air the scientology episode starring tom cruise, r. kelly, and travolta........a big stink, and a possible law suit was threatened it they didnt pull it...its a shame, R. Kelly singing "tom cruise come out of the closet" might be one of the greatest commedy-spoof lines in tv history....

As far as family guy...great show, different humer, the South P guys were definately trying to distance themselves from being seen as the same humor....

by the way king of the hill is on its 13th or 14th season - i was unaware of the popularity of this show to this extent...not my cup of tea, but intresting that its the second highest aired program on fox behind the simpsons...

Being a big fan of both (moreso South Park), I must say that I never viewed the two as similar. South Park is more spoof based, putting sometimes serious situations in humorous light (ex. the one where Jared from subway told everyone he had aides help him lose the weight and he wanted to help everyone else get aides, while everyone thought he meant he had AIDS and wanted everyone to have it); while Family Guy is more about just funny random stories with random stuff thrown in every once in a while (ex. the one where peter fights a chicken for like 3 mins, breaking up a sentence, or he falls down when running home and holds his knee for like a minute or so).

No kidding. I think that South Park would take longer, being that they would have to cut out all the pieces they need and put them into the right possition for each frame, while family guy is just drawing the moving cells for each frame. Granted that South Park probably already has most the stuff like characters, standard scenes, etc. premade and ready to use. But South Park still got the "Osama Bin Laden has farty pants" episode out very shortly after 9/11.

That and the Terry Schiavo episode, where Kenny dies because he is heaven's Keanu Reeves with the Golden PSP...that came out like a week after the whole episode, I still couldnt believe they did it that soon.

Watching a special on South Park once, they said one of the great things about their show was that it was so easy for them to stay up on current events because their style of animation is actually much easier than the conventional style. They are able to create and air and episode in about a week where it would take Family Guy much longer (plus FG would have to go through all the hoops of Fox).

I also like both shows, but never have really equated them with each other. I almost thought the South Park episode the other night was somewhat of an homage to the Family Guy and was laughing at the parts they were mocking. I felt like the SP episode was more about how people make such a big deal about things like showing a cartoon rendering of Mohammed.

If you think about it, without South Park and Beavis and Butthead breaking down a lot of the barriers in animation (we're talking nearly 10 years old when you go back to the very original SP), the Simpsons would probably be as risque as cartoons get. I'm sure both sets of writers and creators have respect for each other. Family Guy doesn't pretend to be anything more than South Park said: A random and disjointed amalgamation of jokes meant to take the viewer's mind off the world for 30 minutes.
Always on point . . .

did anyone think that South Park really was taking a stab a scientology and Issac Hayes? I thought it was more of a social commentary on how people are taking being PC way to seriously.

Although I did not see the scientology episode, I think that Issac probably blew the thing out of proportion. There have been so many episodes that would offend so many people that he has participated in. Then they get to the one that he would be offended by and quits. Learn to laugh at yourself and stop being such a hypocrite Mr. Hayes.

If you listen to their commentary on the DVDs, they'll regularly say that sometimes they don't finish that particular episode until Tuesday night or even early on the Wednesday it's supposed to air. I don't know of any other show that could possibly do that.

I don't think they were so much taking a stab at Issac Hayes, but they were ripping Scientology, saying Chef was brainwashed and how he joined a "fruity little club". At the end of that episode, Kyle said that they shouldn't blame Chef for what happened to him, they should blame his fruity little club (Scientology). Anyway, they had already taken a shot at Issac Hayes when they found out he wanted to leave the show.

He got a sudden case of religious sensitivity when it was his religion featured on the show.
