Why is Salisbury not in Div 1

I have heard rumors of Michigan going NCAA but I haven't heard what Division they would be in, does anybody know anymore about this? Secondly i played division 3 ball, and have played against Salisbury, who and correct me if i am wrong, but have won every game they have played for the past 3 years, were very competitive with Duke in fall ball, although Duke might not have played their starters for the whole game. Why do they not move up? It is almost unfair to have a dominate power house like that in Div 3, everybody knows they get all the D1 transfers in the world, and have a great farm/feeder school such as Essex, i would love to see Salisbury be in Div 1 and not down in Div 3 beating everybody in sight except for a special few by 14+, I know there is a huge gap of talented teams in D 3 but come on, they just beat Gettysburg 13-7. Something needs to be done

Correct me if I'm wrong, but a sport doesn't compete at Div 1 level, a Schools does (with only Hopkins as the exception). Hopkins has a special provision that allows them to do this each year.

It's very difficult for the NCAA to allow you to pick and choose what level you want to play at for all sports.

If Michigan went NCAA, they would be Div 1 as would Michigan State, or any other big 10 school.

Schools don't get to pick their division. Any big school like Michigan would have to go Division 1 for any sport they add. Matt is right about Salisbury. They cannot move lacrosse to Division 1 without an exception from the NCAA, and that won't happen (and I doubt very much they would ever want it). They are a Division 3 school.

Hobart is another DIII school that competes in DI men's lacrosse. IIRC, the NCAA passed a resolution a few years back, making it more difficult for schools to participate at multiple levels. Hobart had gotten into DI prior to that action and Johns Hopkins had long been established at the DI level.

Part of the reason Hobart made the move up, was that Syracuse and Cornell, two other programs with annual games against Hobart, were faced with the risk of losing to a DIII school, and didn't want to take that risk in the DI polls. The risk of not being able to schedule these local opponents played a major role in 'bart taking the step up. I don't know that Salisbury has such rivalries with any DI schools.

Hobart's domination of DIII was even greater than Salisbury's. I think its too bad Salisbury can't move up. Hobart has struggled mightily since moving up, but they are ranked most of the time and that says something for the quality of their program.

Now the disclaimer: I grew up cheering for Hobart, living four miles from campus. The first game I ever saw was the first round of the 1981 playoffs. I got down to Boswell field about two minutes after the opening and MIT was up 1-0. Hobart ran off the next 37 goals.

CG beat me to it, but I was just about to post that these things go in cycles. Here is an excerpt from Dave Urick's bio;

Urick came to Georgetown after spending ten years as the head coach at Hobart College. During his tenure at Hobart, Urick amassed a 122-30 record and won ten consecutive NCAA Division III titles.

Urick moves to Georgetown, and they become a very much improved D1 school - what a surprise! (What was also suprising is that he is entering his 16th year with the Hoyas. I remember when he signed on there - it was a pretty big deal).

Colorado College is another exception, competing at DI in hockey and DIII in lacrosse.

Well Middlebury won 3 in a row a few years ago, but yeah, Hobart won 12 out of 13 D3 championships or something ridiculous before moving up... It's gonna take more than being dominant for a few years to make your athletic department and administration to want to make that kind of push money-wise. Especially since they just ruled last year or the year before that you can't have programs in separate Divisions Hopkins, the hockey schools like Clarkson & CC and some others got grandfathered in).

I think Hockey is it's own animal, When you look at DI in Hockey many schools fit that bill. Duluth DII football DI Hockey and Womens Hockey, Bemidji State, Mankato State, St. Cloud State, Anchorage(assumption), Holy Cross, and I am sure there are many more.

Hopkins had to fight very hard against the ruling to stay DI. Being a Baltimore guy and Hopkins grad, I followed this story closely. Many said that if it wasn't for Hopkins being a big time exception, all others would have been impacted by the realignment ruling. In other words, Hopkins being a DIII school and DI in lacrosse proved that there should be exceptions.
