Regardless of what ASU did earlier in the year, they are starting to put it all together towards the end of the season. By no means was UCSD playing down to ASU on Sunday. They were simply shut down in the second half by the ASU Defense. Maybe the UCSD attack was a little bit timid as the game got a bit physical, the ASU D was throwing down some big hits.

Yeah, that must be it. They were scared of the big hits.

Hughes vs Hughes
The ASU upset over UCSD creates one of the more interesting dilemmas I can recall coming across during my time in the WCLL. When UCSD squares off against their cross town rival San Diego State in a couple of weeks, they will not yet know the outcome of the ASU vs Arizona game, which is the next day. If Arizona wins by a goal, an entirely possible outcome, then the teams end up in a three way tie and the tie-breaker will become the goal differential within their division. The only other team in their division is SDSU, who lost to both AZ and ASU by ten goals.
John Hughes coaches UCSD and his brother Jeff coaches San Diego State. Obviously, Jeff doesn't have the talent on his team that UCSD does, but he is an excellent coach and the Hughes brothers are two of the most respected coaches in the WCLL. But when they take the field on April 14th, John will be faced with the dilemma of needing to beat his brother's team by more than 10 goals. Would you run up the score on your own brother if it affected your playoff chances? Interesting stuff....

YES!! If anyone would understand running up the score it would be your brother, especially if it doens't hurt their playoff chances and it can only help yours.

I would not presuppose that SDSU is going to let UCSD run up the score, they will have to earn every one, ask ASU or Arizona, we don't quit playing. Our game against UCSD, which tends to be one of our better games every year as far as intensity goes, it's that cross-town thing, is just intensified with the brother against brother competition.

Exactly, Craig. I didn't mean to imply that SDSU was going to get rolled over by UCSD. I know that you guys always play hard for the full 60 minutes. I was looking at it more from John's perspective, who not only has the task of beating his brother's squad in a heated rivalry game, but may need to win big to secure a playoff bid. After the excellent season that UCSD has had thus far, it would be pretty shocking if they didn't make it into the first round of the WCLL playoffs, but that playoff spot may hinge on not just the outcome of the UCSD vs SDSU game but the score.
Don't take any of this the wrong way, I am not making predictions and I am certainly not questioning the Hughes' brothers credibility. In fact, it's due to the respect that I have for John and Jeff that I find this such an interesting situation. I'll leave it at that. Best of luck to both squads.

We are dealing with a very similar situation in Arizona HS ball, a possible 3-way tie broken with goal counts. In our case, the #1 team Chaparral still has to play the 3 tied teams due to a make-up game situation. They could take it easy on 2 of 'em and run it up on the other. I don't like using goal differential in games that involve teams other than the ones in the tie because lacrosse has so many lopsided games. Not sure how WCLL does it, but I think a some other criteria make sense:
- record against common opponents (For example, UCSB)
- record against common playoff-qualified opponents
- (if you have to) goal differential against playoff oppenents
My $.02. If these are already in use, I apologize for my ignorance.
Can someone point me to the actual tie-breaker format? I couldn't find it on WCLL.com.

Per WCLL.com:
WCLL Tie Breaker Rules:
1. Record in head to head games between, among, tied teams.
2. Differential in scores in games between, among, tied teams.
3. Differential in scores in games with teams within their division (ie. Division A North, Division A South, etc.)
4. Differential in scores in games with common opponents.
5. Coin Flip.
