Big implications for the Southern division playoffs.
If Arizona beats ASU and UCSD beats SDSU: there will be a three way tie again.
If ASU beats AZ then UCSD goes to Santa Barbara/UCLA winner and ASU hosts UCSB/UCLA loser. UofA would be out (head to head loser w UCSD).
If AZ beats ASU by more than one goal, then AZ is first and UCSD might be eliminated due to head to head loss to ASU. Right?
WCLL Tie Breaker Rules:
1. Record in head to head games between, among, tied teams.
2. Differential in scores in games between, among, tied teams.
3. Differential in scores in games with teams within their division (ie. Division A North, Division A South, etc.)
4. Differential in scores in games with common opponents.
5. Coin Flip.

Wow. ASU. The back to back games have killed some of the better teams this year. This is partially why it is so hard to place teams in the polls. Here are some examples of some of this seasons back to back woes by some of the better teams:
UCSD 1 goal win over Arizona THEN UCSD one goal loss to ASU
Chapman 4 goal win over Oregon State THEN Chapman one goal loss to LMU
Oregon 1 goal loss against Sonoma THEN Oregon 1 goal loss to Cal Poly, THEN Cal Poly loses to Sonoma by 5 the next day.
Arizona 2 goal win over BYU THEN the 3rd game in a row, they lose to Utah by 1
Cal Poly 1 goal loss to Utah, THEN the 3rd game in a row, they lose to Duluth by 1 goal.
Utah beats Cal Poly by 1, THEN they lose to Duluth by 1 the next day.
In february, Utah loses by 1 to Chico State THEN they lose to Chapman by 7 the next day
BYU loses to UCSB by 1 THEN they lose to Cal Poly by 2 the next day
There is no better way to say that on the second day of play (or even the third), it can be anyone's game even against the best teams in the country.
Good luck pollsters!

Re: Great job AZ-based Devils
SOUNDS LIKE THEY (ASU) ARE ON THE RIGHT TRACK
TEAM PLAYS WELL FROM BEHIND BECAUSE THEY CAME BACK AND DID THE SAME THING IN THE CHAPMAN GAME. VERY SCRAPPY AND DEFENSE LOVES THE BIG HITS

I don't get ASU at all. I saw them play against Santa Clara and they barely got by them with a late goal to win it. They were behind almost the entire game. This was against a 1 win team, mind you. I just can't reconcile the team I saw play against Santa Clara beating a team like UCSD. It makes no sense to me.

What if AZ beats ASU by one goal? Where are they going to get a three sided coin?

Then it would be who beats up most on SDSU; differential on games w/in divisionWhat if AZ beats ASU by one goal? Where are they going to get a three sided coin?

Too early to assume UCLA/UCSB in playoffs.

You are right, LMU still has a chance. But they have to beat UCLA and USC and get help from UCSB to even have a shot.

just toss a die. one team gets 1&2, another gets 3&4, and the third gets 5&6

I've talked to Coach Minder and to one of the players on ASU who played for me in high school. Santa Clara was an anomale because ASU had a bunch of guys missing. I don't think you can conclude much from what a team does against a much weaker team especially early in the year. They've played a bunch of other games since then that show that today was an upset, but not a fluke.
I saw UCSD beat UCSB at First Four and I saw them lose to ASU. UCSD looked about the same in both games. ASU started doing the little things in the second half and held UCSD to one goal in the final 25 minutes or so. Frankly, I was surprised how good ASU looked during their comeback. There's no one guy who wows you, but they have a lot of good players and they really left it all in the field during that last part of the game. Getting Pilon back is a help though.
I'm curious to see if ASU can bring it against UCSB without looking ahead to U of A rematch. I'm hoping that game has better attendance than the Arizona Sting games.

Actually, I believe the way that they do a coin toss in a three way tie is that all three teams toss a coin and the odd man out is eliminated.
I also might only be getting this from the movie coach carter. Either way, there's no possibility for a three way tie, since AZ and ASU differ in goals against SDSU.

Not really, if we beat UCLA and USC, we are in. Don't need any help from UCSB

It's complicated but if UCLA beats UCSB and LMU beats UCLA all three teams would be 3-1. (assuming they all beat USC). The tie breaker is head to head goal differential. UCSB beat LMU 12-3.
That means that LMU has to beat UCLA by alot to avoid elimination.
But, if UCSB beats UCLA, LMU is in with a win over USC & UCLA regardless of the goal differential.
So, LMU does need help from UCSB or a very lopsided win over UCLA.
