The LMU Lions are riding high today after an impressive victory over the rival Chapman Panthers. This marks the fourth straight victory for the lions, with five out of their last six games won. Despite a disappointing start to the season, LMU is peaking at the right time and looks poised to make run towards the playoffs.

Chapman came out of the gates firing, scoring the first goal and eventually took a 5-1 lead early in the second quarter. The Lions soon came firing back, rattling off three goals to end the half with the momentum on their side. The first half could have easily gotten away from Loyola, but Junior Jaime Caulkins (3g) and Sophomore James Hinkamp (2g) chipped in with key goals to finish up a strong second quarter.

The second half belonged to the Lion’s defense. The ball seemed to be in Chapman’s possession for much of the third and fourth quarters. However, the D responded well and didn’t seem to tire. Junior Jason Hale led the defense by shutting out the WCLL’s leading goal scorer, Marcus Wooden, for the first time all season. Junior Luga Podesta stopped fourteen shots and was able to make great clearing passes all day through the Chapman defense.

Going into the fourth quarter, the game was all knotted up, 7-7. Chapman took the lead with 5 minutes left to go in the game, and attempted to run out the clock after regaining possession during the face-off. After a Chapman turnover, the ball was thrown down the field in the direction of Panther’s goalie Daniel Kirkpatrick. As he bent down for the ball, Sophomore Brian Minkler (2a) crushed Kirkpatrick, picked up the loose ball and made a perfect assist to the streaking Freshman Greg Ewert (1g, 1a) to tie the game 8-8, with about one minute and thirty seconds left in the game. After another Chapman turnover, LMU made it down field giving them enough time to win the game. With thirteen seconds left, Sophomore John Kiper (2g) scored his second game winner in a row off of the assist from Sophomore Matt Stapleton (1a).

With by far their most impressive victory this season, the Lions now prepare for USC at Leavey Field next Sunday. LMU is playing their best ball right now, and seem prepared to finish the regular season strong.

Got to watch this game. I have seen many Chapman games, and this was very disappointing to watch this talented team fall apart. They seemed to have no drive or purpose while on the field. LMU took advantage, similar to UCLA earlier this year, of a team that has trouble reaching deep when things are not going their way. This is not to take away from LMU, but they were no UCSD or UCSB. Chapman has proven that they can be the best or the worst team on the field at any given time. It will be interesting to see if Chapman can dig deep enough to sweep FSU, Florida, and Central Florida in the upcoming week. Best of luck to LMU against USC and UCLA. That UCLA game could be a good one to watch.

I put in the quote from the LMU write up from below because it almost seems to be in poor form. The hit that the write up talks about on the goalie was a 15 or so yard full sprint and a very hard stick to helmet hit, with NO PENALTY. When you get away with an obvious cheap shot, don't go bragging about it.

Also, sounds like there was a good game between UCSD and Arizona today. Anyone have any details from this one goal game?

Chapman won 14-10. OSU has some good athletes and looked pretty good for a team on the losing end of a four game road trip. Chapman had a spurt in the third quarter out shooting OSU 23-4 and out scoring 8-1. The rest of the game was much closer and the game was wet and cold.

The game was tied at 5 at the half way mark, but Sonoma State pulled away in the 2nd half, outscoring Cal Poly 7-2.

ASU did a great job on the defensive end holding Nick Dean to 1 or 2 goals, which were in transition. Down 4 at the half the devils climbed back into the game. ASU nearly won the game in regulation with a goal that was at the buzzer. ASU dominated the face off in overtime and won the game on their first possesion.

A solid win for the Sundevils coming at the right time of the year.

This was a great game. ASU was able to step up the defense and got a couple key saves (and a couple key pipes) down the stretch. On-ball defense got better and better during the game. Riding and clearing was much improved. Wood and Westfall's ride in OT was the play of the game that won't show up in the stats.

UCSD went to a zone in OT after playing man most of the way. ASU looked puzzled at first, but Pilon fed the crease from behind for a quick stick goal. ASU withstood a couple of penalities in the fourth for offsides.

Great job, Devils. Thanks for giving Phoenix a team to follow. In particular, a shout out to all you AYLL alums.

Chaparral's Austin Gray had a hand in ASU's 5th, 6th, and 7th goals.
Brophy's Kalen Rickard scored the equalizer at 8-8.
Desert Vista's Cody Wood helped create the turnover on the ride in OT that gave ASU the game-winning possession.
Highland's Jeff Pilon assisted on the game-winner in OT.
Saguaro's Pete Noel was a regular on offense.
Gilbert's Ben Vosika lead ASU in faceoffs and Adam Wirtz held-down LSM duties.
Hamilton's Kevin Fischer provided a great defense and a ton of ground balls despite being hurt right before halftime.
(Even Andersen's Brian and Sean LaFlam were ball boys.)

The Devils are picking up Chandler's top two attackman, LaFlam and Nelson (currently #1 and #3 in scoring in Arizona). I hope they can help the cause! Great win. Good luck vs. UCSB.
