US LACROSSE COLLEGIATE OFFICIALS COMMITTEE NEWSLETTER 4/1/06
Effective at the beginning of the 2007 NCAA season, penalty flags used in NCAA games will be blaze orange instead of the traditional gold. Many men's coaches have complained that the gold flags are not sufficiently visible on the newer FieldTurf artificial surface fields, which have become popular over the past several years.
The NFHS has stated that gold flags will continue to be used for NFHS games, but that orange flags can be used on FieldTurf fields with the consent of both coaches.
The blaze orange flags are not currently available, but they are expected to be in stock at most official supply stores by early September so they can be used for fall ball games.

I heard this change was only taking place in states with high levels of hunters in the population (MN, MI for example). Many of them were confusing the referees with zebras, and the blaze orange is designed to afford them some degree of protection.

Honig's actually has added the blaze orange to the catalog. They do note that due to limitations of the printing process, it doesn't display in it's actual neon orange color. There won't be anybody missing these babies on the field!!
