Trainers Required at Games
I went to go watch the UVSC v Fort Lewis game tonight, and in the first quarter one of Fort Lewis's men hurt his shoulder. He asked UVSC for a trainer, but there was not one at the game. Some of the Fort Lewis players started to say that the game should be a forfiet because a trainer wasn't there at the game, that it is USL MDIA policy to have the home team have a trainer. Is this really a rule?

we've had the same question raised at several of our games this year...although I've never seen this rule enforced, I think it is important for everyone's safety.

It would be nice if there could be a qualified trainer at each and every game! However, some teams may simply not have access to a trainer or be able to afford one if there is a cost associated with their services. Perhaps a med student or someone from other medical type programs offered at each school might be willing to volunteer services as a way to gain experience? Just a thought.

we were at S. Carolina last year and they had a trainer, but when we asked him for anything he would say "its in the training room i cant go get it till after the game" but our players needed things such as ice and they didnt have it.... it was reassuring that if someone was seriously injured that there was a trainer there, but what about other stuff too.

This is an interesting topic. I thought that it was already required that home teams provide a trainer.
On a side note: What was the score of that UVSC vs Fort Lewis game?

Because of the trainer incident, UVSC went on a 5-6 goal run at the end of the first to the middle of the second when I had to go. They must have been up by 7-8 at that point.

I am pretty sure there is no MDIA policy, but conferences may have their own policy. In the PCLL, we instituted a requirement this year that home teams MUST provide an EMT or trainer every game.

I dont know if he was important or not, but all anyone could talk about was that UVSC should forfeit, they stopped thinking about the game, and really took themselves out of it.

Does the PCLL enforce any penalties if there is no trainer?

The away team can force a forfeit on the home team.

This is the WCLL rule pulled off their website.
Must have adequate medical care provided at each home game. This is minimally defined as a student athletic trainer.
Penalty:
1st offense: Administrative probation and $100 fine;
2nd Offense: Full probation and $500 fine.

There are some national rule issues with trainers too. Mostly due to liability issues. From what I understand there have been some institutional changes in the profession over the last year. When I say trainers, I mean certified athletic trainers. There could be two very different things here. If the respective league says that a trainer is required then they have to be certified trainers. From what I understand the standards have changed nationally in the athletic trainer arena. The day of student trainers working sidelines is gone. If the league says medical attention has to be available, that could mean many things. An EMT, someone certified in first-aid, safety, and CPR. A doc could qualify for "medical attention".

it is the RMLC's policy that all RMLC home teams provide proper medical coverage at all home games. UVSC has been given a warning for violating this rule and their school's administration has been notified. The club sprts director has assured the conference that he will correct this situation for their last two home games.
