Gretzky has got to be the best. His #99 is retired through the entire NHL... what an amazing accomplishment.

Ah, Knox - you make me laugh! The really amazing time was when the roof of the Hartford Civic Center collapsed from the snow load - either right before or right after a big basketball game. Fortunately no one was hurt, but if the place had been packed - Yikes! I forget if it was bad engineering or missing bolts...

The Whalers might have left but at least you had the former CBS show Judging Amy filmed in Hartford. Fair trade off, I imagine.

I've never seen the show, and didn't know it was set in Hartford. Did a little googling on the Civic Center collapse;
On the evening of January 18, 1978, just hours after the University of Connecticut Men's Basketball team defeated the University of Massachusetts; the weight of snow from the day's heavy snowstorm was too much for the Civic Center roof to withstand and forced it to collapse. Fortunately, there were no injuries.
First of all, I didn't realize it was so long ago! Man I must be getting old.
Why'd it fall?
The three design errors responsible for the collapse are listed below.
The top layer's exterior compression members on the east and the west faces were overloaded by 852%.
The top layer's exterior compression members on the north and the south faces were overloaded by 213%.
The top layer's interior compression members in the east-west direction were overloaded by 72%.
Loomis and Loomis, Inc. investigated the Hartford collapse. They agreed that gross design errors were responsible for the progressive collapse of the roof, beginning the day that it was completed
Sounds like a first class design project! The article also had a picture of the collapsed structure. If it had happened during the B-ball game it would have been a horrible tragedy. Instead it fell at 4:15 in the morning..

What about the Hartford Circus Fire of 1944?

From Wikipedia:
"The Hartford Circus Fire, which occurred on July 6, 1944, in Hartford, Connecticut, was one of the worst fire disasters in the history of the United States. The fire occurred during an afternoon performance of the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus that was attended by approximately 7,500 to 8,700 people."

Heres the big one. No chance it will ever be broken: Glen Hall 502 consecutive games started as a goalie.
In the days of no backups, goalies had to play through injuries and didn't get a day off. Today that would be starting in goal for a team for over 6 seasons straight without a day off.
