Best I can figure that puts Carnegie Mellon on the doorstep for play-offs and it's not even April yet.

The only instance I can find that would keep them out of the play-offs is if 3 teams end up 3w-1l. This could happen if IUP or Grove City wins their head to head and then beats Dayton while the other loses to Dayton. If this happens it goes to the second tie-breaker - goal differential, where Carnegie Mellon is not in the best spot with only a +4 goals margin.

So, for either Grove City or IUP to make the play-offs they need to run the board and they both need to beat Dayton.

There is the possibility and what a story this would be . . . Dayton loses their last two games to Grove City & IUP, then Taylor beats Grove City or IUP, and that same team (IUP or Grove City) then beats the other in the head to head match-up resulting in a 3 way tie for 2nd with all at 2w-2l.

Wait, one last option, if Taylor beats both Grove City & IUP who each have already beaten Dayton, that would give us another 3 way tie for 2nd of teams with 2w-2l and either Grove City or IUP going 1w-3l.

What about cross-over games?

From my vantage point, Calvin could help us out by knocking off Dayton on Saturday morning. IUP is probably not going to lost to Hope, and CMU is probably not going to lose to UMD. We play Grand Valley State on Saturday morning for ours, and that should be a good game.

The way you figured it, and the way I figure it, if you lose only once in your 5 games (4 division, 1 crossover), you are almost assuredly in. The only way you can get knocked out is a 3 way tie for first, and then losing the tie-breaker for both 1st and 2nd.

So, for argument's sake, for our division, let's say Calvin beats Dayton. If IUP or Grove City wins its remaining division games, they are in and Dayton is out (Dayton would have 2 losses). Or, the IUP/Grove City winner could lose another random game, and still get in based on a 2-loss tie-breaker with Dayton (head to head). There are a ton of other scenarios, but for us, we see this as the most likely.

So, Andy, I see this weekend as a real test for Calvin. We're hoping that your guys are up to the task!

The cross-over game does not count towards your region's standings. We are required to play that cross-over game to meet national requirements. It is not used for each region's standings, because as you've noted some of these match-ups are based on historical results tougher than others.

Andy, are you sure about the cross-over game? I wasn't aware that was the scenario. I always assumed the cross-over counts. Is it that way for both A and B? You know there hasn't been a lot of discussion about the cross overs.

I thought the cross-over games counted as well. Could be wrong though, I don't think it was discussed in great detail at the Fall meeting.

Obviously IUP and Carnegie Mellon are two teams that would want these 5th games to count with the historical advantage you're expecting. But let me explain why it really might not be in your interest.

This weekend's games at Calvin include one cross-over and one additional intra-region game.

In IUP's case, say each team goes 1w-1l, IUP would be disadvantaged by having one less game, because if your team is 4-1, Dayton could be 5-1 and your team could get bumped.

In CMU's case, say Calvin throws the cross-over Dayton game and they beat GVSU as well, they could be 6-0 while you are 5-1.

Even if you argue the 6th game should not count, Calvin could still throw the Dayton game and produce a similar result from the outside of your region, I don't think anyone wants teams throwing games.

It is not in our league's interest to let games outside each region determine who represents your region, the 4 head-to-head games and tie-breakers take care of it just fine.
