WCLL Week 4 (2/16 - 2/22): Schedule, Thoughts, & Scores

My comments are not arrogant at all. I remember two years ago, we travelled to play Colorado State. The area had just experienced a blizzard. Their fields were closed, but they looked around and found us a field to play on. They had to travel an hour or two away from Fort Collins for the game. Myself and my teammates really appreciated that. My point is simple, make an effort to find a field for those teams that are travelling from far distances to play a game. Believe it or not, it can be done.

Unfortunately, as of five miuntes ago, Dominican University has cancelled the Santa Clara vs. Gonzaga game on Saturday at 2 PM. SCU has been unable to find another field in the Santa Clara, Contra Costa or Marin counties to be able to play this game.

We are still hoping that the game against Dominican, will be played there on Monday at 1:00 PM.

Our deepest apologies go out to Gonzaga at this time. We hope their scheduled games against Stanford and NDNU can still be played.

My point is simple, make an effort to find a field for those teams that are travelling from far distances to play a game. Believe it or not, it can be done.

It's not like you're really making a point in the first place, because what you're saying is nothing new. It's not like you had some epiphany that no other coach or program has had before, "hey, maybe we should try to find another field to play on."

To make a blanket statement that it can always be done is far too simple of a statement to make with more variables than you likely understand or have taken into account. Maybe in Oregon they have turf fields, and several of them, or there are local schools with turf fields, but in California, often times there simply are no other options, especially in more urban areas.

JT, have you ever dealt with team administration or issues related to finding limited field space? It sounds like your advice is coming from someone who has not been behind the scenes much to see what kind of effort goes into running a program and dealing with issues like the one you brought up. I think the reason that so many people have been aggravated by your post is that it comes off as a bit of an insult to those coaches and team administrators who work so hard to make things like this flow smoothly, and when people attack them without understanding how much work it is, it is taken as an insult...

JT, take your complaints to another forum. We've heard your input but you seem to equate not being able to find an alternate field to not trying to find a field. Unless you've got something constructive to add for these people who work really hard behind the scenes to make these games happen, I'd suggest that you should just say thank you for the effort and take your whining to someone who cares about your opinion. To quote Col. Jessup in A Few Good Men ". .either way, I don't give a d*** what you think you're entitled to!"

jtlax, maybe Oregon should not make any future plans to play in California. After all, you know so much more than we, what could you possibly learn from playing a WCLL team?

My point has been made. I have worked behind the scenes, and I do understand what goes into making this league work. I know what it's like to deal with field issues. I feel really bad for Gonzaga who from the sounds of it, have had their games cancelled. I have no doubt that there are California teams whose players and coaches are searching endlessly for available field space, and to those people I thank. To make another point, I love to play in California. The competition is amazing, and I know on a personal and team level, it has made us better. I just love playing the game soo much, that I find it extremely unfortunate games are cancelled because of rain. Being a northwest kid born and raised, I can't make sense of a game being cancelled because of rain. I honestly believe that if one of your teams were to travel all the way up here only to find out the game was cancelled, you would display similar concerns. Sorry to have offended some people, that was not the purpose of my statements.

I want to thank JTLAX for his staggering insight on playing games in the rain. In all my years of playing and coaching, I had never considered finding a turf field to play on. Wow, our problems are now solved. Thanks.

Sarcasm aside, for us there is not a turf field within a 100 mile radius, and that's no exaggeration. I have never seen it, but I hear that UCSB has a new turf field on campus; if that's the case that would be the closest one to SLO just over 100 miles away.

Before lacrosse became a CIF sport in 2002, there were 3 turf fields in the entire San Francisco Bay Area. Only 2 were available for lacrosse. Berkeley High, James Logan High (no lacrosse team) and Cal. There maybe a few more now. Piedmont has one. SI prep may have one, but they are scarce even in Nor Cal. In the Southland they don't get enough rain to build turf fields. They just close the grass fields for a day or 2, until it dries out, and then play the game at a later time.

Actually there are now quite a few more turf fields in the Bay Area. Here is a page showing the projects completed by one contractor who works in this field. Discounting the professional sports facilities I counted 15 .

You'd better look at those specs again. A lot of those fields are not field turf. Then, you need to discount the number of fields that might be available to use for outside college club sports teams. I'm pretty sure that the answer you get is pretty close to zero.

I will admit I did go through them hurriedly, but I checked at each link to make sure whether it said it was field turf or natural turf . I believe the number was 15 field turf. This company has done others since then and there are probably other contractors working in this field. I cannot comment on the availability of the fields or the fees they might charge.

OK....Here are the Synthetic Fields other than those listed above... JC's:Laney College(Oakland), Merritt College(Oakland), College of Alameda, Jaguar Stadium SJCC, Evergreen College(San Jose), CCSF...Public and Private Secondary Schools: San Mateo HS, Mira Monte HS, Freedom HS, Hoover School (Redwood City), Saint Ignatius, Sacred Heart College Prep.... Witter Field (Piedmont), Berkeley High and Kleeberger Field UCB.

Whittier game has been canceled due to poor field conditions. It is beeing rescheduled for a later date. The UCSD game is on for sure since we have a turf field.

Piedmont High Lacrosse plays on Witter Field in Piedmont. I cannot say who plays at the others. At least some are probably available for a fee. For example, I have seen DeLaSalle Baseball play on Evans Diamond, DLS Basketball in Harmon Arena and DLS Football in Memorial Stadium.
