University of Miami to add Women's Lacrosse in '07

Postby Kevin OBrien on Thu Feb 10, 2005 8:26 am

"We needed to add another team sport and wanted to add something that we already had a facility for," said Connie Nickel, the assistant athletic director for events and the senior women's administrator. "Other teams in the [Atlantic Coast Conference] have women's lacrosse. We wanted to be a good conference fellow and added the sport."

Yeah, they announced it a couple of months ago. So the ACC now has Miami, Duke, UNC, UVA, Maryland, and VT for women's.

Now if Miamia added men's, I think they would have a legitmate shot at winning the ACC within 4 years. You just show your recruits Miami Beach, the dorms that have rows of palm trees lining the drives, a football game, and you'll get 80 or so kids. Maybe 40 will fail out and be beach bums, but that leaves you with a solid squad. hehe.

Just wondering if there has been any talk of Miami (men's team) joining the SELC in the near future? I've seen a few guys walking around campus with sticks and have heard that they have put together a club team of some sort. I'm in my first year of grad school at Miami so that's why I'm curious...

Hey, the more the merrier, but that would be a huge distance for most of the SELC teams to travel for a conference game. Especially Virginia Tech...that would be a real fun bus ride.

I think they were starting to put a team together the past year or two, and play some of the men's club teams down in the area. no clue about selc membership. It's my impression that the women's team has a fair amount of $$ compared to the rest of the swll, and they fly most everywhere right now. don't know what the budget would be for the men's team. It's about a 10 hour drive from Miami to ATL.

I was speaking with their coach when was a senior in high school. He said they were ready to go. I guess it didnt pan out. They would probably have the best uniforms in the league. And all their players would have to have black helmet visors like the linebackers.

I can try to find out who, if anyone, is coaching the team. I want to say that I saw a flyer a while back with a contact named Sean Mulligan? I could be totally off on that though... I know that last semester the team played a game vs the Miami Makos club team.
