Well, a convientent aspect for my team, is I'm a Physical Therapist, and my clinic is about 5 blocks from campus, so my players can get treated by me when needed. The school supplies us AT's for games, but not afterwards.

In the event a player needs to rehab, does he go to the wellness center?

It's been my experience, that most schools don't even allow club players in the training room. When I was at PLU, we were very fortuneate to have a doctor as a coach, and sports medicine as one of his focus. At UPS, I'm currently pulling teeth trying to get my student athletes the same rights as other student athletes, and I don't think we'll ever get it.

We have a deal with a local fitness and sports medecine place where our players can lift during the week, get taped etc before games and practices, and can see a trainer or get specialized sports medecine therapy or training. Its been an excellent resource compared to the open student weight rooms on campus (we don't get any access to Pitts athletics department resources).

If he needed to rehab, that's what I would do.

I realize you can provide that for your players. My question goes out to other programs.

Jeez Tim,

The world doesn't revolve around you dude! :D

Our trainer and the trainer for Duluth have been networking with local doctors to arrange on-site physicians for games as well as easier referrals to specialists though student health services.

We have pretty good USC athletic trainers at all games in SoCal regardless of whether we're home or away. Trainers come to our practices about once a week also. Just this year a one or two of our injured guys stopped into the varsity training facility, and to our surprise they were treated like any other football or basketball player which is awesome. Until they stop treating us I guess we'll keep going there...

The St. Olaf trainer is really good about seeing people when he is not busy. Unfortunately he is usually busy with other athletes that take priority. It would be nice if the club and intramural athletes got the same treatment as other athletes, but the St. Olaf training budget is quite small. A few years ago the head student trainer for the football team at St. Olaf lived with some members of the lacrosse team so he helped out a lot. We have also haad parents who are doctors help out some. Lately a lot of the St. Olaf lacrosse players are taking a sports medicine class. As an official I thought it would also be good for me to have some training in sports med. I have seen too many injuries with nobody around to help the injured player. I think it would be good for everyone to have at least a small background in this. The St. Olaf trainer requires all coaches at St. Olaf to have training in first aid and CPR.

I know at Mines, they provide nothing if a club sports athlete is hurt. Last October (2003) I was seriously hurt playing DU's club team...ended up snaping my left quad at the patella, and displacing the entire patella, and I had to use my personal insurance and use a private Rehab. I hope that other schools are better about that, but I know that my school doesnt really have much money to spend on that kinda stuff I guess.

I was the Athletic Trainer for BYU the past 2 seasons. We have a good setup here in that the lacrosse program has enough money to pay a stipend to a certified athletic trainer, whether they be a graduate student or just work with lacrosse part time. The athletic training program at BYU is great and we have a lot of undergraduate student trainers that work with teams in order to gain experience. I have had a student assigned to work with me over the past 2 years and we are able to provide coverage at every practice and game for the team. We also travel and take care of the team on the road as well. We have regular rehab hours in our own club sports training room. We have arranged with a local sports medicine clinic to have doctor coverage for our team and they try to have a doctor at each home game. For any of the teams in the RMLC you had a chance to experience our sports medicine team this past spring at the RMLC championships.

For those who struggle with adequate coverage I would suggest meeting with your intercollegiate trainers and discuss how you can rectify this problem. There are also most likely clinics in your area that have ATCs or PTs that can help. If you all have any additional questions about how we do things here, let me know.
