next NCAA D1 ACC team?

Postby LAXDawg14 on Thu Mar 02, 2006 2:40 pm

ok so the ACC has now expanded with additions of BC, Miami, and VT....
this is just a hypothetical question....
seeing how the ACC is pretty strong in lacrosse [Duke, Maryland, UNC, UVA] who could possibly be the next NCAA- ACC team. i know title 9 and all that stuff could possibly limit the possibilities, but whats everyones opinion?
teams that have USL-MDIA teams currently are

Georgia Tech
Virginia Tech
Boston College
Clemson
N.C. State
Wake Forest
Florida State
and rumor is that Miami looks to join soon

any opinions? i was just thinking bout this when i was sitting in class today.

well, because Boston College recently (last few years) ended their program, my vote is for nobody to start up a new varsity team. they would be the most likely, IMO

I thought I heard something about FSU planning on going varsity sometime in the future (2010 maybe?)....might just be a rumor though...I also heard that there might be some talk about BC bringing back varsity at some point, but that might just be wishful thinking

What complimentary women's programs do you propose each school adds to balance out their athletic departments?

Serious sports. Anyone can make a joke.

Va Tech, BC have women's lax, and soon Miami will as well.

FSU would be the most likely contender for the men's, as I believe their coach is pushing to get it going eventually. If they go, then hopefully that will put some pressure on teams like Miami, GT and VA Tech to go next. It will take alumni and $$ pressure after the sport continues to grow. NC State was varsity back in the '70s, but was scratched for a variety of reasons. Hopefully they can get back in the sights of the athletic department, as they have tobacco road rivals in UNC and Duke. I think Wake and BC would probably be the last to go.

As for women's programs, at Tech, prime candidates are Soccer and Crew, then possibly lax.

I have to agree that FSU will most likely be the next team to go varsity. Then it wouldn't surprise me if a domino effect started to occur and a lot of the schools start to go. Being a Wake grad, it wouldn't surprise me if it occurred there with in the next 6-8 years, being a private school and seeing the other women's sports that they could take (e.g. crew and lax). The facilities are there to support a team, and with an increasing population of high schools in the area playing lacrosse, it could hurt admissions not having a team, with future students wanting that as a varsity sport on campus.

I highly doubt the University of Miami will field a D1 varsity men's team anytime soon. Besides Title IX issues, the athletic department is a bit strapped for cash. In fact, this was the main reason Miami has decided to push back the varsity women's program by a year (2007-2008 season).

But man, it would be great to be able to see varsity ACC men's lacrosse in Miami someday. 8-)

I really dont think one school is going to go DI in the south. If and when it does happen, I think more than one school is going to go. I've heard the FSU rumor too, haven't heard anything from any of the FSU guys.

Name the NC State player who transferred to a Division 1 School and won a national championship when their D1 program was axed...

Tim Nelson. He went to NCSU his freshman year in '82 but with the program being cancelled, he transferred to Syracuse. In '83 he was the leading scorer (15) in the NCAA tournament while leading the Orange to their first National Championship, over Hopkins. He ranks 5th all time on SU's career points with 271 in only 3 years with the team.

It will happen at FSU. It's just a matter of when. There have been exploratory committees and so forth. I was as close to the team as anyone, being the President for 3 years, and I honestly cant give you a date. If I were to guess, I would look for an announcement in the next 2 years and a team starting shortly after.

If that is true Evan, how is FSU going to comply with Title IX issues? Are they going to add a women's varsity lacrosse program to offset the new monies directed toward varsity men's lacrosse?

I'm on the outside looking in, but I don't see this happening unless someone had big enough bucks to endow both programs at the same time (mens and womens varsity lacrosse). Same thing would apply at any other ACC school without varsity lacrosse.

Sonny,

I believe they are looking into adding both. But I am not certain because at FSU I believe there is already one or two more varsity sports than men's. (women's soccer and cheerleading) So the shcolarhsips might event out. I believe money is the least of the problems

You're right, FSU does have 1 more women's team than men's. But I highly doubt that that women's soccer or cheerleading gives out enough scholarships to even out the Men's Basketball and Football. Those two give out a gajillion scholarships. The disparity is too great for only 1 women's team to even out. Therefore, the main key is scholarship disparity and the money used to finance them.
