Hendrix (Conway, AR) adding DIII lacrosse

Found this one the SELC forum, but it is in Arkansas. Exciting news for lacrosse in this state, for sure.

wow thats amazing... now we can have some of that d-III competition that so many other conferences get... i wonder who they are gonna play... i'd like to see a map with all of the ncaa teams marked off and all of the mdia teams marked off to see the growth of the sport recently... im excited to only have to travel 30 minutes to play some lacrosse against another team... i hope they get it up and running before i graduate...

i dont think it is possible. No other schools in their conference have a lacrosse team. Who would they play? It would very expensive to the schools athletic program to travel all the time. Not to mention, it would be really difficult to draw athletes to play at a d-3 program. I believe in most division 3 schools athletic scholarships cannot be given.

Many of the other schools in the SCAC already have club lacrosse programs and the conference has been discussing the idea of adding this as a conference-wide sport. The travel implications have already been discussed and the teams would follow the same travel as the current SCAC sports. You are correct that DIII schools do not offer scholarships, but that does not mean that they would not be able to field successful lacrosse programs, as DIII lacrosse exists in other parts of the country already.

Congrats to Hendrix for taking this next step and we wish the rest of the SCAC teams success in taking their programs to the next level.

The travel implications have already been discussed and the teams would follow the same travel as the current SCAC sports.

What was meant by Norway's comment about travel is that when they start a program, no other SCAC school will have lacrosse yet so they will have to travel to all the games they will play, not that travel in general would be far too difficult.

They could still draw some teams in for home games though, especially the club teams that are close and want to get a scrimmage vs. a varsity program (once they're established).

Rose Hulman Institute of Technology is a member of the SCAC. I wonder of they will entertain the idea of moving to the NCAA along with Hendrix.

Rhodes College is also a member of the SCAC. They certainly have the facilities to field a DIII team. It will be interesting to see if conference affiliation will draw other teams.
