RUFFLEMUFFINS!!!

I was literally finishing up a post about the shootout- with multiple windows open- when I went to look up a keeper's name- then I realized I was in the wrong window- post gone. Nuts.

It's too late now- I'll do it tomorrow after I get back from the UCSD/ Santa Clara game.

Man- and that thing was long and detailed- prolly three or four pages. I hope I remember it all.

I hope this doesn't hurt my relationship with the forum, cause I'm going to bed angry.

I know it's not your fault, sweety. I know.

Waterboy,
It was nice to meet you at the Shootout. Can't wait to read your writeup. I'll be there today for the afternoon games. Hopefully I'll see enough of them to post a summary of the afternoon's events. In the meantime here's my take on the games yesterday.

The sun was shining on this beautiful and breezy day in Irvine as the teams took to the fields for the first ever Presidents Day Shootout. There were a few surprises in the morning games, not the least of which was the outcome of the San Diego/St.Johns match-up. Although I only caught a few minutes of that contest late in the first half it looked like St Johns came out with a purpose–to be top dog. During the time it took me to walk from one field to another they had scored two goals, taking the score from 5-2 to 5-4. When all was said and done the Johnnies came out ahead, beating the Toreros by a score of 10-8. Looking forward to seeing the Johnnies play against the Cougs this evening.

Another surprise was the outcome of the UCI-PLU game. It was a close competition throughout the game, with the Lutes scoring the game-winning goal in overtime. Final score: 11-10.

Only caught a glimpse of the Davis-Texas State game but Davis was playing a good game when I was there. Spoke with some of the Texas State players on the way to the cars, they were feeling a bit ragged but no serious injuries. When I heard they'd driven overnight to get here I wasn't surprised to hear that. Hope y'all got a good night's sleep at the Windham.

Utah vs Chico State:
The Utes tried their best, but were beaten in the last quarter of the game. Chico was also able to take advantage of a man-up situation early in the third quarter, with Utah again tying the score 4-4. Chico’s final goal was scored by #36, who slid one in from X for the game-winning goal. Final score: 5-4. Though the game was low-scoring it was still very intense, with both teams driving hard through all four quarters. Utah has some quality freshman recruits in their ranks, including #20, Matt Qualey. I can now see why there is such a buzz about this player’s skills. Two others who were in for most of the game were middies Cory Merrell (#11) and #35 Adam Ashton. Keep your eyes on these freshman.

I have to admit I was concentrating more on the Utah team, but Chico did have some standouts. Freshman Attack Steven Calcagno holds a lot of promise and should add significantly to the Wildcat’s offensive line. Senior John Messina-#25-also caught my eye. The Chico defense did a great job around the cage. The Chico fans might want to mind their P’s and Q’s, though, when shouting at the refs. A group of them almost got ejected from the tournament for their over enthusiastic advise.

My main focus was the Claremont games. In their match-up with Northern Colorado, the Bears kept it close, the score going back and forth for most of the first half, with the Cougs leading by one goal at halftime. It was in the second half that Claremont showed the depth of their team, pulling ahead in the second half to win by a score of 14-7. Have to hand it to the Bear’s goalie–88 did a fantastic job fending off the shots lobbed his way.--some really impressive saves on his part. Other standouts on the Bear’s team were #’s 22 and 16 on the offense. Good job Bears. Best of luck to you in your upcoming games.

Claremont’s evening game was against the PLU Lutes. This was the second game of the day for both teams. Claremont took the lead early in the game, scoring four goals before the Lutes fired one off to the back of the net. The Cougs held the lead throughout the game, finishing the fourth quarter with a 12-point lead. Final score 17-5. PLU played a good game, but were out-gunned by the Coug’s offense and shut down by the D. They also didn’t have as many on their roster (21 vs 34), and had some key players out due to earlier injuries. Still, they played a good game, leaving it on the field to the very end. Good luck to the Lutes in their match-up today against San Diego and in their upcoming games.

This was the first chance I had to see the Cougs in action in an official game, and I have to say I was quite impressed. The Cougar squad has a lot of quality recruits this year, including a number of standout freshman. I don’t want to leave anybody out, suffice it to say these rookies are good! The veterans to the team also played well. Two players who returned from injuries suffered last year are making their mark. #6 Sam Mittermiller is contributing significantly to the Coug’s offense while #14 Emery Mitchem has provided a number of takeaways for the defensive unit. It’s great to have you guys back. Props should go out to the three captains—Dylan Sheridan, Tim Thacher, and Jason Trapp—Coach Ginnegar, and his assistant coaches, Mat Wilson and Mike Wilkerson. You guys are doing a great job. Can’t wait to see y’all play at Nationals. :D

The rain that came down last night and this morning in our area should make things a little more challenging today. Hopefully it didn’t rain as hard in Irvine as it did here closer to the mountains. Right now, two hours before the start of day two games it is sunny with intermittent clouds, kind of breezy—looks to be shaping up the same as yesterday. Good luck to all today.

Cathy you are right -- this is quite a surprise, as everyone else who was there reported that the Lutes LOST this game.

As posted in the live action forum:

Gonzaga 12, UC-Davis 11 (final in OT)

Northern Colorado 12, UC-Irvine 9 (final)

Up at 2 pm

Chapman vs Utah
Chico State vs Texas State
San Diego vs Pacific Lutheran

Weather is fine, blue sky overhead, flying from 18 degrees, I'm fine in shorts and t-shirt (other's are bundled up). Grass is very short, creases are the primary dirty spots, fields are flat, but all have a bit of a slant to them towards one end. Very nice facility!

UCLA- 10
Gonzaga- 4

Gonzaga came out tough taking a 3-1 lead into halftime. They seemed to run out of steam in the 2nd half and UCLA dominated putting the game out of reach in the 4th. Good game for both teams.

Senior John Messina-#25-also caught my eye. The Chico defense did a great job around the cage.

I think this is wrong, I'm almost positive Messina is out of eligibility. I looked on the team's website and the roster must not have been updated yet this year because several of those guys are out.

Claremont 7, St. John's 6

After being tied 2-2 at half, SJU went 3-0 in the 3rd, then Claremont came back in the 4th scoring 5 to SJU's 1. It was a close game throughout, great to watch.

My bad. I was going off the Chico website. I could've sworn it was #25 who was looking good out there. Maybe one of the Chico fans who were there could clear up this mystery.

You're right, Dan, I just re-checked my notes and I got the score bassackwards in my summary. The funniest thing is I called that score into grinderpete in the first place after watching UCI score the game-winning goal, then screwed it up in my summary!! Too much fun in the sun, I guess.
