The UCSB/Cal Poly game was quite exciting, despite the absence & "players playing injured" status of some key players. In particular, goalie Mike Sheridan's performance was outstanding-the best I've ever seen. He deserved and received the game ball at the end of a well executed game. Cal Poly's performance was lackluster to say the least.

Game Report from Cal Poly:

The Cal Poly Mustangs suffered their first setback of the 2006 season with a tough loss at the hands of the defending National Champion UCSB Gauchos on Wednesday night. The Mustangs went down 1-0 less than two minutes into the contest on the first of Luke Shaw's five goals. After cruising through their first two games, Cal Poly looked a little rattled early in the game. The Mustangs settled down however, their offense found a little rhythm, and the game remained tight as the first quarter ended with UCSB up 2-1. Unfortunately, the Mustang's momentum went right out the window as they got hit with a 3 minute unreleasable stick penalty to start the second quarter. It looked like Cal Poly's man-down unit would hold the Gauchos to a single goal, but UCSB connected on a second goal just as the three minutes expired to take a 4-1 lead. Cal Poly's defense settled down for the rest of the game, and the offense regrouped and generated a number of excellent scoring opportunites but the Gauchos junior goalkeeper, Mike Sheridan, had a standout performance in the cage and shut the Mustangs down time and time again. UCSB was up 5-1 at the half, and put in a goal early in the 3rd quarter to go up 6-1. After being held to only one goal in over thirty minutes, the Mustang offense finally woke up and put in three goals in less than three minutes to close the gap to 6-4 less than half way through the third quarter. But they couldn't keep the momentum going as their shots either sailed wide or Sheridan collected the save and the Gauchos went on for the 9-5 victory. Despite losing numerous key players on defense from last year's squad, the Gauchos young defense played really well and should help UCSB maintain their prominence on the national MDIA stage.

I know Bluevelvet feels that Chapman is for real, but I don't see many voters around the country sharing that sentiment...at least in the short run. Chapman could destroy everyone this weekend, and it would make UCSB's victory vs. Chapman look that much better.

In retrospect, I am not totally convinced that Chapman is for real. According to people who saw their game with UCSB they have talent.
I have no doubt that the most important factor in the closeness of the game against UCSB was who had graduated from UCSB, not the addition of talented freshmen for either team.
Chapman is young and talented. That usually means inconsistent. They played pretty well against UCSB. But they lost. With their schedule, they should have a pretty good record. The level of their performance against higher quality teams, remains to be seen.
