Baseball Bumped from 2012 Olympics, Lacrosse?

Postby Andy Sharp on Thu Feb 09, 2006 10:12 am

They're out! Baseball and softball won't be played at the 2012 London Olympics. Baseball and women's softball remain on the program for the 2008 Beijing Games, and will be eligible to reapply for readmission to the 2016 games. London, however, is no longer possible.

There is apparently room for 2 more sports in London, wonder which sports are petitioning.

Wouldn't it be interesting to see lacrosse take baseball's place, makes for an obvious headline, though the sport would lose the support of even more baseball loving ADs. We all know how much they love us now.

I don't feel tardy. This was announced last summer. Here is the list of recognised sports by the Olympic Movement:

Air sports Netball
Bandy Orienteering
Billiard Sports Pelote Basque (Jai-Lai)
Boules Polo
Bowling Powerboating
Bridge Racquetball
Chess Roller Sports
DanceSport Rugby
Golf Squash
Karate Surfing
Korfball Sumo
Life Saving Tug of War
Motorcycle Racing Underwater Sports
Mountaineering and Climbing Water Skiing
Wushu

My money is on DanceSport (think "Dancing With The Stars" minus the Stars). It is freakin' huge outside this country. Karate might as well, since it would not require a new venue. The Judo/Tae Kwon Do venue will work. Also, Orienteering would work as well, since "extreme" sports are so big now.

Karate surfing sounds kinda cool. I would definitely check that out. I wonder if they would have to wear pads. :D

I had the same reaction. I at first didn't realize that a good deal of them were seperate sports on the same line. To me powerboat bowling sounded pretty much like the coolest thing I had ever heard of... that and underwater motorcycle racing and life saving tug of war. Not to mention roller chess. Roller chess!

i was liking the Billiard Sports Jai Alai line. i can imagine it now........the creation of a new extreme sport: Jai Alai using Billiard balls. you get bonus points for exploding the balls against the wall. negative points for catching the 8 ball. it would be great.

since we're going to London, i would think that rugby might have a chance at getting into this next Olympic Games.
peace.

I have to think that adding lacrosse would just be like another world games. Although it would have a ton more exposure. I see more about the triple jump during the olympics than I do about lacrosse all year.

Along with Lacrosse i think Rugby (or Australian Rules) should be added. US, England, Ireland, South Africa, Germany, Australia, New Zealand have teams. I am sure that there are others.

Rugby 7's is part of the Commonwealth Games. Rugby Union will not likely be added since the IRB Rugby World Cup is huge.

Aussie Rules or Gaelic Football is not big enough to even consider.
