High School lax predictions and prospects...........

I think you are just looking for negative things towards Rob comments. I agree totally with what Rob is saying. As we would all like to have Dan Forsyth or Charlie Senn on our team i think it is awesome that they have gone somewhere and proved that a kid from minnesota can hang with the kids from MA, CT, NY etc... What is dumb is when a 3rd line middie who would be an average player in the UMLL goes to the D3 program in the middle of nowhere to go to school, but first to play lacrosse. He will probably be disappointed and quit school- or he may love it, no one knows. The recruiting process is a very difficult thing that i am learning all about everyday. I have told many kids who have contacted be and they stated "well i am also looking at fkdsjaflsdafj, its NCAA" i first ask Why?. Many kids say my grandpa went there, or A great Engineering program, or i love to ski and its in the Alps. Thats perfectly cool, its something SJU/wherever cannot provide. If they state "Cause its NCAA lax, not club" thats when i question it. I think thats what Rob is trying to state is think about you academic life not your athletic life first.

Lets not get caught up in this, he is trying to get kids to stay home so he has a better shot at landing them. I also do think he does want kids to do well in college but as we see below UMD and Lees-McRae are about the same. But one is in good weather and one is in bad weather. North Carolina or hmm northern Minnesota. I wonder what school will get out on the field sooner. Rob has done great things for MN lacrosse and runs a fine team but lets not confuse recruiting with great advice.

I agree with you pinball and Chris you are on target with the cost. I also agree with Rob that an instate degree might be better if you want to stay instate your whole life. But chris if you are paying 2 or 3k to play ball the price looks closer and closer and all the sudden warm weather looks nice. I will also say again that NCAA ball over club is worth going out of state. If it were me I would go for the best of both worlds.

Laxman- First, I will start by saying I did play for Rob at UMD. So, yes, I would be considered a little bias. Second, Rob's focus on academics has been center of his program since I started in the late '90's. This is evident through not only his team graduation rate but also the fact that he had a GPA rule well before any other team did. Third, I believe Rob was simply stating that if you want to go into a profession such as teaching (and want to teach in MN), you would be wise to go to a school in Minnesota where you can get your teacher license through the university AND get better hiring consideration by schools b.c you went to a Minnesota school instead of going to a school to play lacrosse and then finding out your career options are limited. Fourth, I don't think Rob was trying to compare varsity level programs to UMD. Fifth, I think the fact that your selling points for the NC school is its warm and a NCAA school and not it has very good educational programs kind of proves Rob's point. Finally, I am not sure that Rob has a evil little plan to rule the MN lax scene by bashing every school that isn't UMD but if that is your interpretation, I guess you are entitled to your opinion.

I was a player and a coach at one time in the UMLL. I now coach at a D3 college . I loved playing club. Rob and Lars did a great job getting that league up and running. I will say that I wish I had played at the D3 level. It is not for everyone but I think that allot of MN players sell themselves short when they do not try. If you want to say home stay home but don't be under some delusion that it is the same. I am good friends with many involved with the UMLL and have been for a long time. It is a good option for allot of kids but I will agree with 5112 that so is a place like Lee's. Also I agree with Rob 100% that you should look at a school for the academics not just for the lacrosse but lacrosse can be a part of that decision.

And yet, it is a small school in NC that (almost) no one in Minnesota has heard of. Heck, I grew up on the east coast and I never heard of it.
Personally, I have a hard time criticizing anyone when their core message is "academics first." There are far too many people in our society who place far too much importance on athletics and, in particular, winning above all else in athletics.
I've competed in a greater variety of athletic events than most people ever will, and I think keeping in shape is important and so is having fun with sports. But anyone who puts athletics ahead of academics, IMO, has their priorities screwed up, and I absolutely can't stand anyone who pouts, screams, or otherwise makes a jerk out of themselves because they lost a sporting event. (Not that I didn't take losing hard on occasion when I was younger, but I look back now and I'm ashamed.)

I reffed an indoor game with Totino and they looked real strong. They were not mising passes and winning almost every ground ball. Dont know how their defense is, but some great athletes out there.

Gnazzo,
I was talking to one of the attackman who plays for St. Thomas (he played at EP last year) and he thought they would be pretty bad in comparison to years past and the other top MN teams.

Just for fun...
I hope they have a strong academic reputation although they're rated 38th among Southern Comprehensive Colleges (according to US News and World Report) behind a lot of schools I've never heard of before and not among the top 100 Liberal Arts Colleges (although that's a tough list)
At least the weather is nice...
FYI: The highest ranked MDIA Liberal Arts College? Carleton College (#5) of the UMLL. Highest ranked MDIA Midwestern College? Calvin College (#2) of the CCLA. Highest ranked MDIA National University? Stanford (#5) of the WCLL.
